About the Job
Knowledge and prior experience in the heavy duty wrecker industry is preferred.
Fleet & Driver Management:
- Oversee daily operations of 15 to 20 wrecker trucks and drivers to ensure timely and efficient service delivery.
- Supervise a team of 15 to 20 drivers, providing guidance, support, and performance management.
- Coordinate with dispatchers to optimize truck routes, reduce delays, and ensure maximum efficiency in service delivery.
- Manage driver schedules, ensuring adequate coverage and compliance with driving hours regulations.
- Ensure adherence to safety regulations and standards, both for drivers and vehicles, to minimize risk and enhance operational safety.
- Monitor and enforce compliance with federal, state, and local regulations concerning vehicle operation, driver qualifications, and environmental standards.
- Maintain and review safety protocols, ensuring all employees are properly trained on safety procedures and emergency response.
- Organize and lead regular safety meetings and training sessions for drivers and dispatchers to reinforce safety best practices.
- Monitor vehicle maintenance schedules and ensure all trucks are compliant with industry standards, performing regular inspections and audits.
- Develop and implement operational strategies that maximize fleet utilization, driver productivity, and overall service efficiency.
- Ensure consistent and effective communication between dispatchers, drivers, and other team members to facilitate smooth operations.
- Oversee daily dispatch operations to ensure accurate job assignments, proper equipment, and timely responses to customer requests.
- Manage the revenue targets for the wrecker service, ensuring optimal billing practices and profitability.
- Track operational expenses, identify areas for cost-saving opportunities, and maintain profitability.
- Collaborate with the finance department to ensure accurate invoicing, cost tracking, and payment processing.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to dispatchers, drivers, and other operations staff, fostering a positive and efficient work environment.
- Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and implement training programs to improve team performance and career development.
- Manage staffing levels, recruitment, and retention of drivers and dispatchers, ensuring a well-trained and motivated team.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all fleet and driver activities, including safety audits, accident reports, and maintenance logs.
- Prepare regular reports on fleet performance, safety compliance, revenue, and other operational metrics for senior management.
- Analyze operational data to identify trends, improve performance, and propose process improvements.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in fleet operations, logistics, or a similar management role within the wrecker, towing, or transportation industry.
- Proven experience managing a large team of drivers and dispatchers, with a strong emphasis on safety and compliance.
- Experience in managing budgets, operational costs, and revenue targets.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage a diverse team.
- In-depth knowledge of vehicle maintenance, safety standards, and industry regulations (e.g., DOT, OSHA).
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities, particularly in high-pressure situations.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficiency in fleet management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and other relevant tools.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.
- Relevant certifications or training in safety, compliance, and fleet management are a plus.
Work Environment:
- This position requires a mix of office work and field visits to oversee vehicle inspections, driver performance, and operational assessments.
- Occasional on-call duties and after-hours availability may be required to handle emergencies or operational issues.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform routine physical inspections of vehicles and equipment.
- Occasional lifting of equipment or materials up to 50 lbs.
