About the Job
The Worldwide Academic Research Vertical Lead within Worldwide Public Sector Education will head Microsoft's global Academic Research go-to-market strategy, and orchestrate internal and external resources to serve the global Academic Research community.
The desired candidate will:
+ Understand the technology needs of global research institutions, the academic research lifecycle, how technology acquisition decisions are made for research, the ecosystem of cloud-enabled services that support research domains, and the funding landscape, support organizations, and technology infrastructure for global academic research.
+ Have demonstrated success advancing the adoption of cloud technology and modern software-centric capabilities in the academic research arena.
+ Preference for individuals with previous experience working in or supporting academic research institutions, with demonstrated success leading technology adoption & digital transformation efforts in research environments.
Microsoft is seeking a motivated leader passionate about the opportunities for Cloud, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, HPC, Quantum, and SaaS to transform research practices, accelerate discovery, and advance research outcomes. This leader will formalize a multi-year strategic go-to-market plan, set annual operational objectives, and drive measurable outcomes. This person will be accountable for global research revenue attainment, cross-industry research collaboration, and coordinating across internal Microsoft stakeholder organizations such as Worldwide Public Sector, Engineering, Microsoft Research, Marketing, and Civic Engagement and Legal Affairs (CELA).
Key initiatives will include increasing awareness of Microsoft's cloud services in the Academic Research Community, develop a prioritized account strategy, generating field seller guidance and supporting assets, identifying gaps and recommendations in user journeys that inhibit adoption, informing technical roadmaps, and implementing go-to-market models that help universities and research institutions deploy AI-enhanced workloads in Microsoft Azure in support of research initiatives.
Familiarity with Azure cloud services is expected, along with foundational understanding of the common workloads, utilities, and compliance requirements in the Public Sector (e.g. HIPAA, GDPR, etc.).
This role requires a deep understanding of the Academic Research sector, broad technology knowledge, proficient business acumen, the ability to provide strategic business direction and leadership, and the executive presence to enhance and support Microsoft's position within the global public sector research arena.

**Responsibilities**
+ Establish and maintain relationships with academic research in Higher Education and the broader Public Sector to understand trends and needs, and to support research digital transformation initiatives.
+ Engage the global academic research market via direct customer engagements, conferences, workshops, and industry events to network and promote Microsoft offerings.
+ Guide a geographically distributed global team of field personnel (account executives, technology specialists, industry advisors, etc.) to identify and support target accounts, assist account teams in customer engagements, build pipeline, and grow revenue.
+ Gather, synthesize, and prioritize technology and business model needs, and identify gaps in Microsoft offerings to inform roadmaps in alignment with business strategy.
+ Develop a partner ecosystem for the delivery of research capabilities into customers, ensuring a wide range of partner offerings and geography.
+ Collaborate with engineering teams and advocate for the necessary product investments.
+ Build relationships, influence, and support various Microsoft stakeholders such as Worldwide Public Sector, Engineering, Microsoft Research, Marketing, and Civic Engagement and Legal Affairs (CELA).
+ Leverage customer and partner success stories to build use cases, case studies, references, and evidence to articulate & amplify the impact of Microsoft capabilities on Research outcomes.

**Qualifications**
**Required Qualifications:**
+ Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Finance, Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years experience in business consulting, sales, sales operations, information technology (IT), account management, business development, marketing, IT field sales, or a related field
+ OR equivalent experience.
+ 3+ years experience in in Near Term Strategy (1-2 years out), Management Consulting, or Finance.
+ 4+ years of experience working in or with academic research institutions AND 2+ years of domain level expertise in research-related subjects typically associated with computationally intensive workloads (e.g. weather, chemistry, etc.).
+ Efficient business and technical acumen, with 2 + years of experience in the cloud and/or diverse technology solutions for the research sector.
**Additional or Preferred Qualifications:**
+ 15+ years of experience working in or with academic research institutions.
+ 2+ years of experience working across distributed virtual teams and a matrixed and complex business environment, encompassing diverse roles, cultures, and organizations
+ 2+ years of experience in technolgy sales
Sales Strategy Enablement IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $101,200 - $194,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $130,000 - $213,200 per year.
