Summary - basic function of the role
Leads a team of technical specialists and assigned operators in the commercial production and technical development of, biomedical textile structures from a variety of raw materials using state of the art weaving and knitting equipment. Supports efficient utilization of manufacturing equipment through production scheduling and completion of preventative maintenance and continuous improvement activities. In addition, support engineering in process development and creation of manufacturing methods, techniques, practices, and procedures in support of ISO13485:2016 International Standard for Medical Devices and Good Manufacturing Practices. Lead and participate in continuous improvement activity for Safety, Quality, Delivery and Costs to ensure Cortland Biomedical meets/exceed customer expectations.
Shift: Monday - Friday on site; 8 - 4:30 pm or 8:30 - 5:00 pm; flexible
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain safety policy and procedure in accordance with site requirements and at the direction from corporate health and safety.
- Ensure cross functional safety reviews for manufacturing equipment and processes in the weaving and knitting areas.
- Support management in setting operational goals for the weaving and knitting areas and development of teams individual annual performance and development goals.
- Schedule production for weaving and knitting equipment/area including time and attendance reporting for direct reports.
- Report performance to key operational metrics to management team.
- Support the technical development, with direct reports team, of woven or knit biomedical structures including, but not limited to, double cloth tubular, bifurcating, Leno, and tapered fabrics and tapes
- Collaborate with engineering team for review of weaving patterns, knitting patterns, and warping plans as a subject matter expert.
- Ensure equipment is maintained by scheduling and verifying completion of preventative maintenance tasks, routine cleaning, performance checks, and safety checks.
- Troubleshoot technical/mechanical issues with direct reports and support of maintenance.
- Review and provide feedback on PFMEAs, Quality Plans, Procedures, Work Instructions, Forms and other QMS documentation to engineering departments.
- Ensure direct reports are trained to job duties and appropriate QMS documentation including review\maintenance of training records.
- Provide technical training for new team members and propose external training when appropriate.
- Conduct effective problem-solving activities including Corrective Action and Preventative Action (CAPA) assignments.
- Support the identification and installation of new capital equipment including potential travel to suppliers for site acceptance testing or training.
- Support execution of equipment installation and operational qualifications, process characterizations, performance qualifications and other scientific protocols to support the creation of statistically based product specifications.

- Support establishment, implementation and maintenance of Continuous Improvement methodologies including, but not limited to, 5S, Standardized Work, TPM, etc. for the weaving and knitting area.

Skills and Competencies
- Experience working in textile-forming and/or medical operations such as weaving, warp knitting, weft knitting, braiding, scouring, heat setting, mechanical testing, or QA inspection preferred.
- Familiar with the physical and mechanical characteristics of polymers, fibers, yarns and fabrics
- Ability to read and interpret weaving and knitting patterns.
- Ability to create weaving and knitting patterns and program them into an electronic machine preferred.
- Experience within a ISO13485 manufacturing environment (or similarly regulated) preferred.
- Detail oriented, innovative, and self-motivated.
- Capable of generating and delivering training to engineering, peers and direct labor teams.
- Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as a team member.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and comfortable interacting with team members and customers at all levels.
- Self-starter able to work under minimal supervision.
- Microsoft Office suite experience (outlook, word, excel, power point)
Education and Experience
- High school diploma (or GED) plus 10-15 years' experience warping, weaving and/or knitting. 2-4 year technical degree preferred.
- 3+ years of supervisory experience over technical specialists and/or operators.
Physical Demands
Employee may have to lift documents/work materials up to 30 pounds in weight. Employee may have to lift parts/work materials up to 50 pounds in weight. Employee will have to be able to walk/climb to a variety of primary work locations, including traveling by air/auto to remote sites. This can include occasional ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like. Employee may move themselves in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces. Employee will need to move about to accomplish tasks or move from one worksite to another. Employee will need to operate machinery and/or power tools, motor vehicles, and heavy equipment. Employee will need to listen, understand, and speak with team members in person, telephonically, and electronically at all levels within a diverse workforce and with supported organizations. Employee will need to assess the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned. Employee can work in front of a personal computer and telephone for long periods of time. Will have repetitive motions that include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers with a variety of tasks including working with fine yarns.
Work Environment
Primary work environment is a controlled manufacturing space with specific gowning and PPE requirements. Employee will be exposed to heavy levels of noise in some areas and require hearing protection.
