As a Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant at Bayshore Animal Clinic, you will play a pivotal role in providing top-tier care for our patients, supporting the veterinarians in a variety of clinical settings, and ensuring the best experience for both pets and their owners.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Monitoring:
- Monitor patient vitals during surgery, anesthesia, and recovery to ensure their safety and comfort.
- Assist with pre-operative assessments, intraoperative monitoring, and post-operative care for spays, neuters, and other surgical procedures.
- Administer medications as directed by veterinarians, including intravenous fluids, injectables, and oral medications.
- Provide life-saving CPR during emergency care situations, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic life support (BLS) for pets in distress.
Surgical & Anesthesia Support:
- Prepare patients for surgery, including inducing anesthesia, monitoring anesthesia levels, and adjusting parameters as needed during the procedure.
- Operate and maintain anesthesia machines, surgical instruments, and monitoring equipment.
- Assist the veterinary team with sterile techniques and ensure a sterile field during surgeries and other invasive procedures.
- Prepare surgical packs, instruments, and supplies, ensuring they are sterile and ready for use.
Diagnostics & Laboratory Support:
- Collect and process samples for laboratory tests, including blood work, urinalysis, fecal tests, and cytology.
- Perform in-house diagnostics such as digital radiography, ultrasound, and electrocardiograms (ECG).
- Record and analyze diagnostic test results, providing preliminary assessments and ensuring the proper care is administered based on findings.
Client Communication & Education:
- Communicate effectively with clients, explaining diagnostic findings, treatment plans, and home care instructions.
- Educate pet owners on preventive care topics such as vaccinations, nutrition, parasite control, and disease prevention.
- Provide guidance on post-operative care, including wound care, medication administration, and monitoring recovery.
Emergency & Critical Care:
- Assist with emergency care, providing critical support for animals suffering from trauma, poisoning, or acute illness.
- Administer CPR during cardiac arrest situations and participate in the triage of critical patients.
- Collaborate with the veterinary team to stabilize patients in critical care, including the administration of IV fluids, medications, and oxygen therapy.
General Veterinary Care:
- Perform routine exams and provide preventive care to pets, including vaccinations, wellness exams, and diagnostic testing.
- Prepare patients for procedures such as dentals, x-rays, and laboratory diagnostics.
- Handle animals safely, including restraint, and ensure their comfort during procedures and examinations.
- Assist with client intake and ensure that all relevant information is collected for patient records.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
To be successful in this role, you should have the following qualifications:

Experience:
- Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, or CVT) or Veterinary Assistant with experience in small animal general practice, surgery, anesthesia, and emergency care.
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a veterinary clinic or hospital, with a preference for candidates who have worked in surgery and anesthesia support.
- Experience with critical care, including the ability to perform CPR, handle emergency situations, and assist in life-saving procedures.

Education:
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), or equivalent certification preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology or similar program preferred.

Technical Skills:
- Proficiency with veterinary software, patient management systems, and electronic medical records (EMR).
- Ability to operate diagnostic equipment, including digital radiographs, ultrasound machines, and anesthesia monitoring devices.
- Skilled in surgical support, including sterile techniques, instrument handling, and post-operative care.

Physical & Emotional Resilience:
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to multitask effectively.
- Comfortable handling emergency situations and critically ill patients in a compassionate and professional manner.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and be on your feet for extended periods during shifts.

Client-Focused Communication:
- Strong communication skills to provide clear, concise information to clients, ensuring they understand their pet’s care plan and treatment options.
- Empathy, compassion, and the ability to educate pet owners on preventive care, treatment options, and post-care instructions.

Certifications & Continuing Education:
- Current CPR certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- Continuing education in emergency care, anesthesia management, or surgical nursing is a plus.
