Skills, Knowledge & Expertise to be Successful
The ideal candidate will have previous experience as a veterinary technician, with a strong background in a variety of clinical settings, including emergency, specialty, or general practice. A minimum of 3 years working as a trained surgery technician is essential, demonstrating competency in anesthesia monitoring, venipuncture, and the ability to perform basic medical mathematics for medication dosing, fluid calculations, and other critical procedures. This role demands confidence and precision, especially in high-stakes situations where quick decision-making and technical proficiency are key to successful patient outcomes.
- Emergency & Critical Care Expertise: Experience in emergency or critical care is highly desired but not required. Candidates with a passion for high-pressure environments and a strong foundation in critical care medicine will thrive. However, we are willing to provide specialized training to the right candidate, offering an opportunity to grow within a dynamic and fast-paced clinical setting. The ability to remain composed under stress and adapt to rapidly changing situations is crucial for success in this role.
- Strong Technical Skills: A strong technical skill set is necessary for this position. The successful candidate should have demonstrated proficiency in using a variety of diagnostic equipment, such as digital radiography, ultrasound, and laboratory testing tools. Additionally, experience with anesthesia monitoring—including maintaining accurate records, managing anesthesia depth, and troubleshooting equipment—is essential. A keen understanding of veterinary medical technologies will enhance the quality of patient care and contribute to the overall efficiency of the practice.
- Team Player: The ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team is vital. The ideal candidate will have a positive, collaborative attitude and will be able to communicate and coordinate seamlessly with veterinarians, other technicians, support staff, and management. Flexibility, respect for others' expertise, and a willingness to support colleagues in busy or challenging situations will be essential qualities for success in this role.
- Excellent Communication: Effective communication is key in this role, both with clients and within the team. The technician should have the ability to explain complex medical procedures, treatment plans, and follow-up care instructions clearly and compassionately to pet owners. Empathy and clarity in communication will ensure clients feel informed, supported, and confident in the care their pets are receiving. Furthermore, the technician must be able to provide clear and concise feedback to the veterinary team, particularly in fast-moving or emergency situations.
- Compassionate and Detail-Oriented: Veterinary technicians must possess a deep commitment to animal welfare and exhibit compassionate care. This position requires the ability to handle emotionally charged situations with professionalism and empathy, particularly in emergency or critical care cases. A detail-oriented approach to every task is necessary, from surgical preparation and medical record keeping to administering medications and monitoring patient progress. The ideal candidate will be someone who consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that each animal receives the best care possible.
- Certification: While RVT (Registered Veterinary Technician) or LVT (Licensed Veterinary Technician) certification is preferred, it is not required for this role. However, candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to ongoing professional development and may be encouraged to pursue certification if they do not already hold one.
