Position Overview:
We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Veterinary Oncology Technician/Assistant to join our dedicated oncology team. In this role, you will work closely with our veterinary oncologists and medical staff to provide exceptional care to pets diagnosed with cancer. The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for animal welfare, a background in veterinary care, and an interest in oncology.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care: Assist in the care and monitoring of oncology patients, including those receiving chemotherapy, and other advanced treatments.
Treatment Administration: Administer chemotherapy drugs, supportive medications, and IV fluids under the supervision of the oncologist. Assist in preparing and ensuring the safe handling of cytotoxic medications.
Diagnostic Support: Collect diagnostic samples (blood, urine, biopsy, etc.) for testing and assist with diagnostic imaging procedures (X-rays, CT scans, Ultrasounds, etc.).
Client Education: Communicate with pet owners about treatment plans, medication administration, side effects, and post-treatment care instructions.
Clinical Procedures: Assist with routine and specialized procedures such as catheter placement, blood draws, and administering injections.
Laboratory Work: Prepare and process laboratory samples, run diagnostics, and assist in interpreting results.
Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for oncology patients, including treatment plans, progress notes, and any adverse reactions.
Inventory Management: Ensure that chemotherapy and other oncology-related supplies are stocked and properly maintained.
Team Collaboration: Work closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and support staff to ensure a high standard of care and patient comfort.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or equivalent (required).
3 years of experience as a veterinary technician or assistant
Veterinary Technician Certification (LVT, RVT, or CVT) preferred.
Experience in veterinary oncology or a similar specialty is highly desirable but not required.
Skills & Experience:
Strong knowledge of veterinary medical terminology, animal behavior, and procedures.
Experience with chemotherapy, radiation, and other oncology treatments preferred.
Proficiency with medical equipment, including IV pumps, infusion pumps, and diagnostic tools.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to provide compassionate and clear explanations to clients.
Ability to handle sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and carry animals and equipment up to 50 pounds.
Ability to stand for long periods and perform physical tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Comfort working with potentially ill and difficult-to-handle animals.
