Description:JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Under general supervision, assists the veterinarians and researchers in surgery and radiology, animal care, treatments, and diagnostic and preventative procedures.
- Maintains medical records and inventory.
- Provides non-surgical technical assistance to researchers as directed.
ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:
The daily responsibilities and activities of an Emory DAR large animal anesthesia technician include but are not limited to:
- Provides direct clinical support for large animal anesthetic, imaging, and surgical events associated with the DAR service.
- Surgical prep, positioning, anesthesia administration, monitoring, and recovery of animals
- Technical skills: Intubation, catheterization, animal restraint, basic pre-op physical exams, administer analgesics/anesthetics/other medications.
- Familiarity with multiple anesthetic circuits and equipment (examples: rebreathing/non-rebreathing systems, ventilators, vitals monitors).
- Tracks use of controlled drugs according DEA regulations.
- Ability to perform blood draws and other biologic sampling, with follow up submission of samples to the DAR Diagnostic laboratory.
- Must familiarize themselves with large animal IACUC protocols regarding approved surgical procedures and medications.
- Familiarity with obtaining digital radiographs under the direction of a veterinarian while using appropriate safety measures.
- Provides technical assistance for animal procedures not directly associated with large animal surgery service.
- Acts as a front-line technician for large animal tech assistance, including blood draws, observations during the work week, and medication administration.
- Assists with management and maintenance of large animal surgery areas and equipment.
- Follows appropriate disinfectant and sterilization procedures.
- Notifies supervisor of low inventory or other supply needs in surgery.
- Utilizes steam autoclave and Sterrad sterilization for surgical equipment.
- Follows weekly/monthly/annual cleaning schedule and completes tasks on record.
- Submits monthly validation testing to Quality Assurance lab.
- Communicates and collaborates with Emory researchers under the guidance and supervision of a veterinarian.
- Provides clinical care for all animal species within DAR as needed and other related duties as assigned.
- Participates in the weekend and holiday on-call rotation schedule shared with DAR treatment/triage veterinary staff.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Applicants with a valid driver's license and able to obtain Emory Safe Driving permissions are preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A high school diploma or equivalent. Three years of experience as a veterinary technician
- OR a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of experience as an animal care technician
- OR graduation from a two year veterinary technician program and one year of veterinary technician experience.
- Equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
