Job Summary:
As a Pharmacy Technician, you will play a crucial role in supporting our veterinary team by accurately preparing and dispensing medications tailored to the needs of our animal patients. Your attention to detail, strong organizational skills, commitment to animal welfare, and strict adherence to security protocols, especially for controlled medications, will contribute to providing top-notch veterinary care.
Essential Functions:
- Medication Preparation: Accurately count, measure, label, and package medications prescribed by veterinarians for various animal species, ensuring proper dosage and instructions.
- Inventory Management: Monitor medication inventory levels, anticipate needs, and place orders supplies to maintain a well-stocked pharmacy while minimizing waste.
- Prescription Processing: Receive and process prescription orders from veterinarians, and support staff, ensuring clarity and completeness. Verify prescription accuracy and contact veterinarians for clarification if necessary.
- Patient Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of medication dispensing, dosages, patient information, and any communication with veterinarians regarding prescriptions.
- Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to pharmacy laws, regulations, and safety standards, ensuring the pharmacy's compliance with relevant veterinary and pharmaceutical guidelines. Strictly follow security protocols for controlled medications.
- Quality Control: Perform routine checks to ensure the accuracy of medication preparations, including proper measurement and labeling, to prevent errors and ensure patient safety.
- Client Interaction: Interact with pet owners, answering their questions regarding medication administration, potential side effects, and dosage instructions. Provide exceptional customer service while following security protocols.
- Collaboration: Work closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure coordinated patient care and accurate communication of medication-related information.
- Continuing Education: Stay updated on new medications, dosage forms, and pharmaceutical technologies to enhance your knowledge and skills, contributing to the advancement of pharmacy services. Stay informed about changes in security protocols for controlled medications.
- Maintain Cleanliness: Keep the pharmacy area clean, organized, and compliant with hygiene, safety standards, and security measures to ensure a safe and efficient working environment, particularly for controlled substances.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician training program is preferred.
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) designation is a plus.
- Experience in a veterinary pharmacy setting or a human pharmacy with a strong interest in veterinary medicine is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in accurately measuring and counting medications.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, for interactions with clients and the healthcare team.
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical and veterinary terminology.
- Familiarity with pharmacy software and record-keeping systems.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and composure.
- Commitment to animal welfare and providing the best possible care for our patients.
- Knowledge of security protocols and strict adherence to handling controlled medications in compliance with regulatory requirements.
