Veterinary Emergency Doctor - Job Description
Compensation:
- Base Salary: $160,000 + 22% production bonus (total earnings ranging from $200,000 - $300,000 annually)
- Continuing Education (CE): 100% covered, including online and in-person courses, plus $3,500 for CE-related travel expenses
Shifts:
- Hours: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
- Swing Shifts: Flexible options (e.g., 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM, 2:00 PM – 2:00 AM, 4:00 PM – 4:00 AM)
- Shift Frequency: 156 shifts per year (about 3 shifts per week, 12-13 per month)
- Team Size: 3-4 doctors per shift
Locations:
- Greater Chicago Area (Schaumburg, Buffalo Grove, Naperville, South Loop)
- Schaumburg: 6-8 new sites opening in January 2025
- Most hospitals have 10 doctors and 3 leadership roles: Medical Director, Hospital Manager, and Nursing Manager.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Education: DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree.
- Experience: 1 year of emergency or critical care experience preferred, but not required.
- Exotic Animal Experience: Preferred, but willingness to treat exotics is required.
- Computer Skills: Proficiency in practice management, electronic medical records (EMR), and collaboration software.
- Communication Skills: Must be able to read, speak, and hear clearly to understand and complete tasks. Must communicate professionally in person and over the phone.
- Surgical Skills: Willingness to learn and perform minor and major emergency surgeries.
- Availability: Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating or as-needed basis.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Consultations: Answer medical questions over the phone.
- Triage & Treatment: See patients immediately as part of the veterinary emergency triage process.
- Diagnostics: Perform physical exams and necessary tests (e.g., ultrasounds, x-rays, bloodwork, biopsies).
- Diagnosis & Treatment Plans: Develop and communicate diagnostic and therapeutic plans to clients.
- Estimates & Records: Prepare and present treatment estimates and maintain accurate medical records.
- Surgical Procedures: Perform minor and major emergency surgeries.
- Client Education: Educate clients on aftercare and preventative measures as needed.
