Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Veterinary Assistant to join our growing team. As a Veterinary Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting our veterinarians in providing exceptional care to our patients. You will assist in a variety of clinical and administrative tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the practice and provide excellent client service. The ideal candidate will have a passion for animals, a strong work ethic, and a desire to work in a collaborative team environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Support:
- Assist veterinarians during examinations and medical procedures.
- Prepare and maintain examination rooms, ensuring they are clean, organized, and stocked with necessary supplies.
- Collect and prepare laboratory samples, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
- Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
- Monitor patients’ vital signs and behavior during exams and procedures.
- Perform kennel duties, including cleaning, feeding, and providing basic care for hospitalized animals.
- Provide supportive care to patients post-surgery, including monitoring recovery and assisting with follow-up care instructions.
Client Interaction:
- Greet clients and patients in a friendly and professional manner.
- Communicate effectively with clients to explain treatment plans, discharge instructions, and follow-up care.
- Help clients with billing, scheduling appointments, and handling minor inquiries.
- Educate clients on preventive care, nutrition, and basic pet health needs.
Administrative Support:
- Assist with maintaining patient records in the practice management software (IDEXX Cornerstone).
- Help with inventory management, ensuring that supplies are stocked and reordered as needed.
- Assist in preparing and organizing surgical and medical equipment for procedures.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment to ensure a safe, efficient, and pleasant atmosphere for staff and clients.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience: Previous experience in a veterinary setting (at least 1 year) is preferred but not required. On-the-job training is available.
- Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of animal handling, basic veterinary care, and common procedures.
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact positively with clients and coworkers.
- Ability to stay calm under pressure and assist in emergency situations.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for long periods of time.
- Familiarity with veterinary practice management software is a plus.
Working Conditions:
- Hours: Full-time position, Monday thru Friday with half-shift flexibility.
- Physical Demands: Ability to lift, carry, and restrain animals up to 50 lbs. Some physical activity is required, including standing for extended periods, bending, and moving equipment.
- Environment: You will work in a fast-paced veterinary practice, which may involve interacting with animals in various states of health or distress. Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided.
