About the Job
The Vet Care Technician II works directly with the veterinary team in supporting the care of our research animals to maintain their health and wellbeing. They will perform daily veterinary care and technical medical procedures working with a wide variety of species including but not limited to dogs, pigs, rabbits, and sheep. This position assists the veterinary team in all aspects of animal care.
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8a - 4p
Responsibilities:Key Accountabilities
• Performs daily health assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and clinical treatment of laboratory animals.
• Operates and maintains medical and laboratory equipment (e.g. anesthetic machines, electrocardiogram (ECG) machines) of varying complexity.
• Reads, understands, and follows study protocols.
• Follows and collaborates on detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs) in a highly regulated environment meeting or exceeding industry standards (United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)).
• Provides daily clinical veterinary care (medical treatments, diagnostic, imaging, and technical procedures) for stock and research animals and maintains appropriate documentation.
• Scheduled on call availability for afterhours support and triaging phone calls.
• Handles and restrains laboratory animals.
• Provides surgical preparation assistance and peri-operative care.
• Monitors anesthesia and recovery.
• Performs dental prophylaxis.
• Maintains records of controlled chemical substances in accordance with federal regulations.
• Identifies needed veterinary supplies to maintain the health and welfare of the animals and notifies appropriate staff for ordering.
• Informs the Veterinarian of any issues affecting the conduct of preclinical studies.
• Routine surgical procedures (i.e. dental extractions, skin closures, etc.) with vet support.
Other
• Follows all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and other applicable laboratory or company policies and procedures.
• Maintains confidential information.
• Supports and participates in company initiatives as directed.
• Performs periodic review of all applicable SOPs to ensure accuracy and confirm procedures are being performed according to SOPs. Participates in SOP writing, reviews, and revisions, as needed.
• Completes training requirements as assigned and maintains appropriate training documentation.
• Maintains compliance and adheres to all safety regulations, policies, and procedures and good documentation practices.
• Maintains a thorough knowledge and ensures compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Association of Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), and other applicable regulations.
• Interacts with clients, other employees, and the community in a professional manner.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of anatomic and physiologic variations in lab animals, animal husbandry, behavior, feeding, nutrition, diseases, and reproduction.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with ability to work with personnel at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to multi-task and participate in multiple projects and department initiatives concurrently.
- Exhibits accuracy and adaptability performing laboratory operations, some of which may be difficult and/or novel.
- Participates in continuing education programs.
Minimum Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- One year experience working as a Veterinary Assistant, Veterinary Technician, or in a similar laboratory environment performing similar duties.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software, data capture software, and similar computer applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree in Life Sciences, Laboratory Animal Technology, or Veterinary Technology.
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or equivalent.
- AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification.

- Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds on occasion.
- Ability to frequently stand and move (e.g. walk, bend, reach, lift, crouch, push, pull, lift.) during work shift.
- Ability to perform, observe, and audit necropsy, surgical, and medical procedures.
- Manual dexterity (e.g. feeling, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion) to operate PC and other office equipment.
- Required to have close visual acuity (e.g. preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading, visual inspection involving small parts) and depth perception (with or without glasses/contacts).
- Required utilization of provided personal protection equipment (PPE).
- Environmental conditions when working with animals may include working under dirty, dusty or wet conditions.
- Occasional exposure to potential hazards such as hot water, steam, mechanical equipment, biological substances, loud noise, odors, chemicals, and to range of outdoor weather conditions.
- Regular on-site attendance as scheduled by management with weekend and after hours on-call rotation.
*This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range is $21-$25/hr and will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person’s relevant experience and/or education level.
