Job Summary: Performs a variety of manual tasks associated with the construction and repair of water distribution and wastewater connection facilities as assigned. Works on construction projects, usually in utility capacity, by transferring from one task to another where demands require worker with varied experience and ability to work without close supervision.
Essential Functions:
- Regular and timely attendance at work.
- Install valves, water lines, and manholes; sewer pipes with appropriate fillings and tees.
- Repair streets, sidewalks, curbs, and meters.
- Assist in measuring distances from grade stakes.
- Bolt, nail, align, and block up under forms.
- Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications.
- Gather and organize materials to be transported; load pipe, manhole, and various other materials onto truck for delivery to job site.
- Position, join, align, and seal pipe sections.
- Erect scaffolding, shoring, and braces.
- Mop, brush, or spread paints or bituminous compounds over surfaces for protection.
- Apply caulking compounds by hand or with caulking gun to seal crevices.
- Grind, sand, or polish surfaces such as concrete, steel, and plastic.
- Saw lumber, dismantle forms, remove projections from concrete, mount pipe hangers, and dig out and clean around pipes.
- Check stock in yard for job assignments and for up-coming jobs.
- Perform maintenance on machines, trucks, etc., ensuring that equipment is greased, washed and cleaned, and oil is changed.
- Pick up around job site ensuring that used parts and materials are not left, and that ground is leveled back to grade and sod is replaced.
- Mix concrete, as needed.
- Direct traffic, put up barricades, cones, and delineators.
- Serves as "essential personnel" and is required to remain available for immediate call-in due to any natural or man made disaster, or any other event the Director of Public Works, the Assistant City Manager, or the City Manager deem necessary.
- Contribute to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Licenses:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- One (1) to three (3) months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid, Class "C" Texas Driver's License
- Class I Wastewater Certificate, preferred, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to write simple correspondence; ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to present a positive image of the City at all times.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions, water meters, and work orders.
- Knowledge of basic water distribution/waste water collection system construction methods.
- Ability to operate a City of Pearland vehicle for business purposes, back hoe, trailer, forklift, shovel, level, laser, depth stick, hammer, power drill, pick axe, pliers, concrete broom, wrench, saw, metal detector, water tapping machine, sewer tapping machine, and pager.
