JOB SUMMARY
This is an entry-level professional engineering position. Work is of a technical nature performed in the field and office in connection with investigation, development, design, construction, and maintenance of County engineering projects. Responsibilities include performance of varied engineering duties in connection with major and minor municipal utility or public works programs. Work involves the independent application of engineering skills and knowledge of engineering projects of a public service nature. Incumbents are expected to plan working details and to make technical decisions; however, work assignments are received from a professional superior who defines the scope of the work to be performed and reviews the work in process and upon completion. Major technical problems are discussed with a higher ranking engineer before taking action.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Reviews plan submittals for consistency with departmental and industry standards.
- Assists with in-house designs of utility or public works infrastructure.
- Identifies new and existing utility or public works infrastructure from as-built drawings.
- Prepares monthly construction progress charts for designed projects.
- Prepares permits, preliminary engineering reports, environmental reports, plans, specifications, contract documents, pay estimates, and change order addendums.
- Maintains as-built construction drawing files.
- Interprets drawings, blueprints, survey reports, maps, aerial photography, soils reports, environmental reports, and other topographical geologic data to plan projects.
- Performs computer-aided drawing (CAD) functions on a limited basis.
- Provides technical guidance and answers questions regarding construction activities; coordinates engineering projects.
- Assists in monitoring activities of firms contracted to perform environmental tests and monitoring.
- Performs basic administrative duties including written reports, memorandums, letters and electronic correspondence, interaction with vendors, and communication through telephone and meetings.
- Provides exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication.
