Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (In office)
Job Location: Riverside, CA
Salary Range: $28.85 to $34.97 per hour (depending on experience)
Job Summary
The Union Representative I plays a crucial role in advancing the member-driven union by fostering local and state power for workers. They execute and organize campaigns for political elections, contract negotiations, and the statewide legislative agenda. Their focus is on supporting and servicing union members, providing assistance in navigating collective bargaining agreements, resolving workplace disputes, and accessing union benefits and services. Additionally, they play a key role in organizing the community, building relationships with organizations and stakeholders to advance shared goals and promote social and economic justice. By amplifying the collective voice of workers and strengthening solidarity, they contribute to building a strong labor movement that empowers workers and advocates for policies benefiting the working class.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Collaborate with union leadership and staff to develop long-term organizational strategies and goals, actively participating in strategic planning and decision-making processes.
• Collaborate in the development and implementation of campaigns, including but not limited to political elections, contract negotiations, and the statewide legislative agenda.
• Support and facilitate training programs and workshops to enhance the skills and knowledge of fellow union representatives and member leaders.
• Mobilize workers by raising awareness and facilitating discussions regarding worksite issues, politics, public policy, and other matters affecting the lives of workers.
• Actively recruit new members through orientations, AIMS, membership meetings, new member house visits, and special events. Lead and coordinate organizing efforts and campaigns to increase membership density in targeted industries, worksites, and regions.
• Conduct advanced analysis and research on industry trends, policy issues, and political landscapes to inform and guide campaign strategies.
• Participate and lead in IHSS Orientations and execute regional IHSS growth plans.
• Cultivate social justice, civic engagement, and community influence through local political involvement, human rights advocacy, and health & welfare councils.
• Foster participation in political activities that hold elected officials accountable to working families.
• Build external relationships with the community, county officials, and workers to drive campaigns, enhance union development, and increase public awareness.
• Identify, mentor, and develop member leaders through leadership academies, councils, and bargaining institutes.
• Establish and maintain strong relationships with union members, identifying their abilities and potential contributions to the union.
• Accurately manage and update membership data to monitor and develop member activists, leaders, and member participation.
• Collaborate with colleagues to implement effective communication systems, ensuring effective outreach to members and providers.
• Assist in creating impactful print and digital communications, including leaflets, flyers, photos, and social media posts.
• Provide essential assistance to members and providers as needed.
• Maintain organized work files and comply with administrative reporting requirements.
• Represent the union at conferences, conventions, and other professional events, networking with industry experts and staying updated on best practices in the labor movement.
• Conduct regular assessments and evaluations of organizing campaigns and initiatives, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing corrective measures when necessary.
• Stay informed about changes in labor laws, policies, and regulations, actively advocating for pro-worker policies and participating in legislative lobbying efforts.
• Assist with department projects and perform other duties as assigned which are reasonably within the scope of work in this job classification

• Knowledge of labor rights, contract language, and lobbying skills.
• Strong strategic and critical thinking skills.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively deliver presentations to small and large groups.
• Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, VAN, Organizer, and UDW database
• Work effectively in team settings, as well as independently.
• Ability to successfully manage and direct teams including member volunteers.
• Effectively prioritize and multi-task assignments and responsibilities.
• Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends, and travel as needed.
Preferred Qualifications, Education, and/or Experience:
• High school diploma or equivalent
• 1-2 years of extensive union or comparable organizing experience
Preferred Bilingual Language(s) in either:
• Spanish
• Vietnamese

Requirements:
• Must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance that covers business driving, and an automobile for business use.
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours, often including nights and weekends.
