Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Assist with construction, operation, maintenance and repair of electrical substations and switchyards.
- Works in various types of Substations with voltages from 15kV to 500kV.
- Assist with below grade and above grade conduit / raceway installation.
- Assist with below grade and above grade grounding installation.
- Assist with assembly & installation of Steel Structures.
- Assist with installation of aluminum bus and strain bus.
- Assist with installation and maintenance of high voltage circuit breakers, disconnect switches, voltage transformers, potential transformers, capacitor banks.
- Installation of secondary wiring, control enclosure work and relay panel installations.
- Applicants with experience in foundation installation are preferred.
- Receives training both in book/classroom skills and on the job skills. Must continue to pass ongoing training to proceed to higher skill/job levels.
- Follows all safety guidelines as part of training.
- Works around hazardous equipment.
- Works around excessive noise from machines, jackhammers and other equipment, with proper hearing protection.
- Works at varying heights above ground, in manholes, and/or in confined spaces with proper Personal Protective Equipment.
- Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must understand basic operations of electrical utility transmission & distribution systems.
- Must demonstrate skills, practical job experience and/or formal training equivalent to the skills and training obtained in 13 - 24 months of the Utility Lines Construction Substation Technician Apprenticeship Program.
- Must understand electrical hazards associated with transmission and distribution voltage substation construction.
- Must understand safe work practices and safe work clearances and have the ability to identify potential hazards for all employees.
- Must be able to walk, climb, and work from ladders, or at various heights, on uneven and slippery surfaces, performing mentally/physically demanding work.
- Must be able to lift, move and maneuver heavy weights of up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis.
- Must be able to wear PPE as necessary.
- Must be able to maintain attention during dangerous tasks.
- Must be capable of pulling, pushing, bending, stooping and kneeling on a frequent basis.
- Must have endurance necessary to perform these duties throughout a standard ten (10) hour day according to the schedule. Must be able to work long hours and overtime during holidays, emergencies, weekends, etc. as necessary.
- All applicants must have a valid driver’s license and those with a CDL will be given preference.
- Must have transportation to and from the show up location.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
- Must be able to pass a background check and MVR.
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years work experience in Substation Construction.
Pre-Screen
- Upon offer, employees are required to subject and pass both a pre-employment drug screen and background and/or MVR check.
License & Certifications:
- CDL Required.
Travel Requirements:
- Must be willing to travel and work away from home.
- Willing to travel out of state for emergency storm work.
