Position Title: HSI STEM Tutor, Computer Information Systems (CIS)
IT/Cybersecurity (Temporary, Part-Time, up to 10 hours a week, based on

Rate of Pay: $13.85 - $18.35/ hour

Position Summary:
The Pima Community College East Campus Center of Excellence in IT - HSI
STEM IT Knowledge & Context team is seeking HSI STEM Tutors for
Computer Information Systems (CIS) courses including: Programming,
Networking, Cybersecurity. HSI STEM Tutors assist our students in
developing comprehension in CIS coursework and improve study skills and
habits to lead to successful completion of CIS coursework. Tutoring is
provided either through one-on-one tutoring sessions, group tutoring
sessions, or embedded in classes. Tutors are trained and certified
through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA)
International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC). All tutors
are required to attain Level I certification within one year of being
hired.
Subjects needed: CIS Courses (Programming, Networking, Windows,
Linux, Cybersecurity),
Program Summary:
The purpose of the HSI-STEM - IT Knowledge and Context Grant is to
increase the number of Hispanic and low-income students attaining
degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math
(STEM); and to develop model transfer and articulation agreements
between two-year HSIs and four-year institutions in such fields. The
focus of this program is to attract more students and support them to
persist and compete in the high demand field of IT/Cybersecurity. It
also improves the capacity of our IT meta-major to meet the high demand
of employers in our region for IT and cybersecurity professionals. The
grant provides for innovations in technology, teaching strategies and
student outreach. HSI STEM Tutors will work closely with the Grant
Program Manager, Academic Director and campus administration to meet the
goals and objectives of the grant, and to meet the needs of students in
the target areas and populations.
This position is contingent upon continued funding through designated
external sources. This grant is set to expire on 09/30/2026.
The work schedule for this position is flexible and may include
working evenings and weekends. The hourly rate is based on certification
level.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist students by providing instructional tutoring and assistance
with basic concepts, specific problems, homework, test preparation,
and the most effective use of textbooks and instructional materials
in a virtual environment and in person
- Provide students with appropriate and effective study skills to
increase their academic success and independence both online and in
person
- Provide students encouragement and support in the areas of
self-confidence, study habits, and time management
- Report any problems or concerns with equipment or materials to the
HSI STEM Grant team.
- Establish effective and cooperative relationships with diverse
student and employee populations
Job Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Proven classroom excellence (grade A or B) or industry experience in
the subject(s) to be tutored
- Written Faculty recommendation for the subject(s) to be tutored OR
vetting of content knowledge
- Evidence of success in CIS (IT/Cybersecurity) academics
Additional Job Requirements:
- Tutors must complete CRLA level 1 certification within one year of
employment
Preferred:
- Tutoring Experience
- Bi-lingual Fluency (writing and speaking) in English and Spanish
The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and
abilities:
- Patience, compassion, and creativity
- CIS subject knowledge and the ability to teach subject matter to CIS
students, particular need for knowledge and ability to tutor in:
Linux, Networking, Ethical Hacking, and Python, Assembly, C, C++,
and/or Java programming.
- Flexibility in instruction and the ability to approach learning from
different perspectives
- The ability to model and mentor student success in academic courses,
including CIS
- Ability to work effectively and inclusively with a diverse
population of learners
