Patient Preparation:
- Prepare patients for ultrasound procedures by explaining the process and ensuring their comfort.
- Position patients correctly for optimal imaging.
- Apply ultrasound gel to the area being examined.
Ultrasound Imaging:
- Operate ultrasound equipment to capture images of organs, tissues, and blood vessels.
- Perform diagnostic exams, such as obstetric and gynecological scans, abdominal scans, and vascular studies.
- Assess the quality of images to ensure they meet diagnostic standards.
Data Analysis & Reporting:
- Review ultrasound images to ensure they are clear and suitable for diagnostic purposes.
- Record findings and create reports for physicians.
- Maintain patient records and imaging data accurately.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with radiologists, doctors, and other medical staff to discuss patient care and results.
- Assist in interpreting results and discussing possible next steps with the healthcare team.
Equipment Maintenance:
- Ensure that ultrasound equipment is functioning properly.
- Perform routine checks and report any malfunctions or need for maintenance.
Patient Care:
- Address patient concerns and provide reassurance during the procedure.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to healthcare regulations.
- Education: Associate’s degree or certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography from an accredited program.
- Licensure/Certification: Most employers require certification from a recognized body, such as the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating ultrasound equipment and interpreting images.
- Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate with patients, doctors, and other healthcare professionals.
- Attention to Detail: Strong focus on accuracy and precision in obtaining and analyzing diagnostic images.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to work with patients in various positions and perform tasks that may require standing for long periods.
