Key Responsibilities:
Preparation of the Operating Room:
- Prepare the operating room for surgical procedures by sterilizing instruments, setting up surgical tools, and ensuring all necessary supplies and equipment are available and functioning properly.
- Confirm patient identity, surgical site, and procedure using the hospital’s verification protocols (e.g., patient safety checklist).
- Ensure that sterile drapes, sterile instruments, and necessary equipment are properly arranged and ready for use.
Assisting in Surgery:
- Assist the surgical team by passing instruments and supplies to surgeons during the procedure.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team, ensuring instruments are readily available in a sterile and efficient manner.
- Maintain a sterile field throughout the surgery by following infection control protocols.
- Retract tissues and assist with the handling of specimens, such as biopsies or surgical samples, during the procedure.
Sterilization and Equipment Maintenance:
- Ensure all surgical instruments and equipment are cleaned, sterilized, and maintained according to established protocols.
- Assist in the setup, operation, and cleaning of surgical equipment, ensuring it is ready for the next procedure.
- Troubleshoot and resolve minor equipment issues, and notify the appropriate personnel of any major malfunctions.
Patient Care Assistance:
- Assist with patient positioning on the operating table to ensure comfort and proper alignment for the surgical procedure.
- Monitor patient safety throughout the surgery, including maintaining proper body positioning and ensuring the surgical site remains sterile.
- Help prepare and apply surgical drapes, dressings, and bandages under the direction of the surgeon.
Post-Surgical Duties:
- Assist in closing the surgical incision and applying sterile dressings.
- Help transfer the patient to the recovery room once the surgery is complete.
- Clean and disinfect the operating room, preparing it for the next procedure.
Documentation and Record-Keeping:
- Accurately document surgical instruments used, any issues encountered, and the procedure’s progress for patient records.
- Maintain inventory of surgical supplies, ordering replacements as needed.
- Ensure proper handling and documentation of specimens or samples taken during surgery.
Safety and Infection Control:
- Adhere to all safety standards and infection control guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and sterilization protocols.
- Ensure that the surgical environment remains clean, organized, and sterile at all times.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other members of the surgical team to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the surgical procedure.
- Communicate effectively and promptly to anticipate and meet the needs of the surgical team.
Professional Development:
- Stay current with advances in surgical technology, procedures, and safety standards through continuing education and training programs.
- Maintain certification and participate in relevant professional organizations.
