The Transportation Safety Practice Lead earns a competitive salary and great benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, a health savings account (HSA), a flexible spending account (FSA), and all staff start with at least 24 days of PTO. We are targeting a salary of $110,000-$170,000 for this position. Candidates who qualify for the higher end of the pay range typically surpass all stated qualifications, demonstrating exceptional expertise, advanced technical skills, and a strong, positive reputation within the industry.

A Day in the Life of a Transportation Safety Practice Lead
Practice Leads are Director-level positions who oversee one of our core national service areas. As our Transportation Safety Practice Lead, you will develop and implement the strategic vision for the success and growth of our safety practice. At Toole Design, the safety practice is one of our largest service areas that includes safety action plans, Vision Zero, and a wide variety of safety-focused projects. Working closely with our Research and Data Science Practice Leads, you will be responsible for keeping our work on systemic safety analysis, road safety audits, and countermeasure selection at the leading edge of the industry. You will have opportunities to independently manage projects across the country and will work regularly with a team of civil engineers, planners, landscape architects, researchers, and data scientists to ensure that our Active Transportation Plans, design guidelines, and roadway design projects reflect safe systems principles. You'll be at the table with clients and colleagues from a variety of disciplines, helping to write national design guidance, conduct research, develop tools and resources, and deliver a wide array of innovative projects. You will identify and spearhead business development opportunities, lead project pursuits, and help uphold the firm's commitment to Quality Control. In an industry that is constantly changing, you'll help us ensure that our safety work remains at the leading edge of the field.
Qualifications of a Transportation Safety Practice Lead:
- At least 15 years of experience in the transportation industry, with a solid understanding of multimodal transportation safety and experience or a desire to become a national leader in safety for vulnerable road users
- A bachelor's or master's Degree in civil engineering, urban planning, or a related field
- At least 3 years of leadership experience (managing or leading teams toward a common goal)
- At least 5 years serving in a project management role
- A broad knowledge base in multimodal transportation, with specific experience in transportation-related safety research and applied practice. This includes knowledge of proven safety countermeasures, crash modification factors, descriptive crash analysis, and developing and implementing strategies that help public transportation agencies embrace a strong safety culture
- Experience with proposal writing, grant writing, and/or business development
- Desired skills/experience:
- Developing State Highway Safety Plans
- Familiarity with the Highway Safety Manuel
- Leading research related to multimodal safety
- Strong knowledge/experience of roadway design and engineering practices
- Knowledge of analytical tools and practices used in systemic safety analysis (crash trees, systemic safety analysis, safety performance functions, statistical analysis, reviewing analysis outputs)

Work Schedule for a Transportation Safety Practice Lead
This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home up to 2 days per week. The Portland office of Toole Design is conveniently located in the heart of Portland's central business district, blocks from multiple light rail and bus routes and walking distance from Red and Blue line Stations and the Transit Mall (serving major bus lines, and Yellow and Green MAX lines). The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit.
