A Day in the Life of a Transportation Engineer
You are at the forefront of brainstorming creative solutions for challenging projects, both lead and support interdisciplinary teams. You develop 2D design on projects ranging from roadway reconfigurations and intersection reconstructions to toolkits of quick-build, safety, and complete streets solutions. You partner with planners and urban designers to select multimodal performance measures and evaluate alternatives. You are a key communicator with clients and the public, translating their priorities into creative solutions and helping them understand the "why" behind design recommendations. You get to work with a close-knit team that is passionate about what we do.
We are targeting a salary range of $80,000 to $94,000 for this position.
Qualifications of a Transportation Engineer III or Project Engineer I:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in civil engineering or related field
- A Professional Engineering (PE) license, or the Fundamentals of Engineering Certification (FE) and on track to obtain a PE within 1 year of hire
- At least 4 years of transportation-related experience for Engineer III, and at least 6 years for Project Engineer I
- A broad knowledge base in aspects of street design and understanding of civil engineering drawings
- Experience developing conceptual design plans and/or construction documents and cost estimates
- Basic to advanced experience with collision data, safety countermeasure selection, and safety audits
- Proficient in Computer Automated Design (AutoCAD)
- Interest in multimodal transportation issues and design (such as active transportation, Complete Streets, Safe Systems Approach, curbside management, and first-last mile infrastructure) and desire to learn about practice areas that are new to you
It would be a plus if you had any of the following:
- A broad knowledge base in street design and urban multimodal planning
- Experience with bicycle and pedestrian projects
- Experience conducting public outreach and engagement
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and multi-phased projects
- Experience with modeling and analysis tools such as Highway Capacity Software, Synchro, SIDRA, and VISSIM
- Experience coordinating utility, right-of-way, street lighting, traffic signals, and landscape and hardscape layout
- Experience leadings tasks or managing projects

Work Schedule for a Transportation Engineer
This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week. Our team enjoys working together in the office on planned 'team' days including Wednesdays. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home 2-3 days per week.The Portland office of Toole Design is conveniently located in the heart of Portland's Transit Mall, served by many MAX light rail and bus lines. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit.
