A Day in the Life of a Project Transportation Engineer
You are at the forefront of brainstorming creative solutions for challenging projects. You support interdisciplinary project teams to help deliver multimodal transportation projects in a wide range of contexts,including roadway reconfigurations, intersection redesigns, and bikeway and trail design. You use programs such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, ArcGIS, and Synchro to oversee and contribute to production work on your projects, and state-of-the-art approaches to create sustainable multimodal transportation networks.
You work on a wide spectrum of projects that inform your design work, including multimodal corridor and intersection studies, traffic and crash analysis, and design guidance and standards. You share your knowledge with staff and clients to develop feasibility studies, Vision Zero and safety plans, streetscape plans, conceptual designs, cost estimates, and construction documents including signing and striping plans and traffic signal plans.
You lead small Oakland and western region design projects and serve in other project leadership roles on larger/complex projects. You contribute to and lead some engineering business development efforts and pursuits for Northern California. We are targeting a salary range of $104,000 to $119,000 for this position.Candidates with more years of experience or exceptional qualifications may fall into a different pay range.
Work Schedule for a Project Transportation Engineer
This full-time position typically works a hybrid schedule of 40 hours per week. Our team enjoys working together in the office on 2-3 planned "team" days per week, including Wednesdays. We provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home up to 3 days per week. Our Oakland office is located in the heart of downtown Oakland and is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit.
Qualifications of a Transportation Engineer:
- Bachelor's or master's degree in civil/transportation engineering
- Professional engineering license (California preferred)
- 6+ years of relevant experience including but not limited to developing concept design drawings, construction documents including signing and pavement marking plans, cost estimates, and traffic engineering studies (If you have 10+ years of experience, please apply to our Senior or Principal level roles)
- Experience serving in a project or design management role
- A broad knowledge base in aspects of street design and understanding of civil engineering drawings
- Basic to advanced experience with collision data, safety countermeasure selection, and safety audits
- Proficient in Computer Automated Design (AutoCAD)
- Experience in Complete Streets design, including the design of bicycle and pedestrian facilities
- Understanding of the MUTCD at the state and federal level
- Experience in leading business development efforts
- Experience in leading marketing pursuits
It would be a plus if you had any of the following:
- Experience working on engineering projects for Caltrans District 4, the City of Oakland, and other public agencies in Alameda County and throughout California
- Interest in multimodal transportation issues and design (specifically for bicycle, pedestrian, Safe Routes to School, Complete Streets, Vision Zero, and/or transit integration)
- Knowledge base in civil engineering with a transportation or roadway focus and specific knowledge of horizontal and vertical roadway geometric design (MUTCD and AASHTO)
- Experience in Highway Capacity Software, Synchro, SIDRA, and/or VISSIM
- Experience with operational analysis
- Experience preparing transportation and local agency permit documents
- Experience conducting public outreach and engagement
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and multi-phased projects
- Experience coordinating utility, right-of-way, street lighting, traffic signals, and landscape and hardscape layout
- Knowledge of ADA and drainage requirements
- Knowledge of maintenance of traffic plan development
