Engineering Sciences is seeking a Translational Engineering Senior Scientist to join the Biomechanics group within VCGT. The full-time role will support R&D initiatives with a focus on Device & Instrument Design. The successful candidate will have strong technical and product development skills and a demonstrable understanding of complex product innovation through FDA approval. Additionally, the candidate will have strong hands-on expertise in the mechanical assessment of devices, instruments, and drug-delivery platforms for clinical translation. This position is based in Providence, RI, and will report to the Associate Director, Translational Engineering.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:

- Provide expertise on the mechanical aspects of device performance, including biomechanical assessment of a range of transplant sites with consideration of patient ambulation.
- Collaborate with the design and simulation team to identify critical structural and anatomical parameters for effective design. Evaluate the performance of device concepts and prototypes through hands-on evaluation and data interpretation to support design feedback.
- Work cross-functionally to assess surgical implications of device parameters in silico and small and large animals.
- Develop test methods for new and existing technology platforms and perform associated Technology Transfer activities.
- Design and implement standard and non-standard testing protocols to establish failure modes of device assemblies and components to provide possible solutions through design modifications.
- Identify, evaluate, and manage vendors to support early-mid phase device prototyping.
- Interface with the process and analytical development engineers to ensure design for manufacturing.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, and structural mechanics (e.g., fatigue analysis, nonlinear materials).
- Proficient in designing detailed mechanical components using SolidWorks.
- Experience with FEA (e.g., ANSYS Mechanical), CFD (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, or Star-CCM+)
- Excellent knowledge of mechanical engineering design concepts, ASTM standards, design control, and tolerance analysis.
- Strong understanding of implantable materials and best practices to develop medical devices and support submissions to regulatory bodies and governmental agencies.
- Excellent verbal / written communication skills and ability to quantify experimental results and present to cross-functional groups effectively.
- Demonstrated excellence in planning, executing, and analyzing experiments.
- Project management skills with flexibility to multi-task and adapt to evolving priorities.
Education and Experience:
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
- 4-7 years (Ph.D.) or 7+ years (MS) industry experience in medical device and combination product research and development, including mechanical components and fixture designs.
