GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Texas Lawyers’ Assistance Program (TLAP) of the State Bar of Texas seeks an experienced, collegial, and highly professional licensed attorney or a Masters level licensed therapist (LPC, LMFT, or LCSW) to work in support of TLAP’s mission, which is to provide confidential support and referrals for lawyers, law students and judges who are experiencing issues with substance use and/or mental health. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
- Assists in operating confidential helpline; provides crisis counseling, brief intervention, support and referrals for law students, judges, and lawyers, as well as colleagues, friends, and family members concerned about impaired lawyers.
- May facilitate group discussions in person and/or via online meeting platforms.
- Assists in increasing the legal community’s awareness of TLAP by making presentations, conducting training, and writing for print and online media on topics related to TLAP’s mission.
- Assists in recruiting, training, and maintaining relationships with a statewide network of volunteer lawyers, law students and judges.
- Assists in recruiting, training, and overseeing monitors who volunteer with the Grievance Referral Program of the Office of the Chief Disciplinary Counsel and the Board of Law Examiners.
- Maintains a collegial and collaborative relationship with the Grievance Referral Program of the Office of the Chief Disciplinary Counsel, the Board of Law Examiners, Texas Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers, TLAP Committee of the State Bar and all departments of the State Bar of Texas.
- Assists in maintaining and expanding an up-to-date resource database of physicians, behavioral health professionals and treatment programs in Texas and the United States.
- Maintain membership in behavioral health and legal profession organizations to remain current on developments.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Must be a licensed attorney, Texas license preferred, in good standing with substantial and direct experience in addressing at least 3 of the following: crisis support, substance use disorders and related disorders, familiarity with the recovery community, peer intervention, assessment and referral, other mental health disorders and other behavioral and personal problems that affect the well-being and professional performance of attorneys and law students OR a Masters level therapist (LPC, LMFT, or LCSW) licensed in Texas with a minimum of 3 years post-license clinical experience. Requires demonstrated education and knowledge of impairments affecting legal professionals including stress and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, mood disorders and cognitive impairment, and familiarity with the recovery community. Requires experience designing, developing, and delivering professional presentations, as well as excellent speaking, writing and computer skills. Must have superior judgment, interpersonal skills, integrity, and demonstrated commitment to, and experience with, working collegially and collaboratively in a team environment. Travel required up to 20% and rotating availability to handle off-hour coverage of TLAP phone.
