Responsibilities
The successful Executive Director of Student Health and Counseling & Psychological Services will:
Strategic Leadership & Administrative Support
- Provide the vision, leadership and overall delivery of integrated, comprehensive, and quality mental and physical health services. Direct areas of responsibility include Lafene Health Center and Counseling & Psychological Services. Additionally, works closely with and provides administrative support for the Morrison Family Center for Student Well-being and Cats’ Cupboard.
- Oversee the Infectious Disease Advisory Committee (IDAC) and Lafene Health Center’s response to infectious disease threats.
- Develop and implement mental and physical health data collection resources for all areas. Use data to assess and report outcomes related to the quality of programs and services. Ensure efficient use of institutional resources and the positive impact on student health. Cultivate and lead a culture of data-driven decision-making.
- Maintain operational policies, protocols, procedures, and processes for all areas within student health and counseling & psychological services that align with policy and accrediting agencies, as well as national, state, and local regulations and agency requirements.
- Provide leadership for the University’s prevention, outreach, and educational services in the areas of health and counseling & psychological services. Work closely with the Associate Vice President, Division of Academic Success & Student Affairs and University leaders to collaborate on emerging, promising, and best practices.
- Enforce privacy practices, ensuring all regulatory and licensing requirements are being met.
Fiscal Management
- Develop, plan, and manage annual budgets for student health and counseling & psychological services in the portfolio. Serves as the leader for cultivating new revenue sources including insurance and third-party billing.
- Develop sound policies for any services that charge fees and ensure that such policies are administered and controlled appropriately. Develop, implement, and monitor all contractual services provided for various services by other university departments, agencies, and companies as required.
Human Resource Management
- Responsible for leading and providing oversight of recruitment, training, supervising, developing, and evaluating all staff. Is also responsible for the general administration of all protocols, procedures, and necessary compliance for personnel matters.
- Establish and maintain open channels of communication in the development of an effective and highly performing team. Identify ways to bring out the best in one another including providing timely feedback on performance goals and as a means of improvement. Facilitate a fair and inclusive working environment.
- Assess staffing needs and promote pathways, opportunities, and development for personnel through on-campus and off-campus training, conference attendance, mentoring, on-the-job experiences, etc. Encourage, support, and model a culture of learning and growing while monitoring overall effectiveness and goal accomplishment.
- Report directly to the Associate Vice President for Student Well-being. Serve as an advisor to the Well-being Collaborative and university leadership on issues related to student health and counseling & psychological services.
Facility & Information Management
- Work closely with Kansas State University Facilities to ensure a safe, efficient, and effective environment in all physical space assigned and occupied by Lafene Health Center, Counseling & Psychological Services and Cats’ Cupboard.
- Direct the development and management of annual replacement and renewal investments, as well as mid-long term capital needs.
- Direct the assessment and planning of all information and technology needs within the portfolio units – to include consideration of computers, applications, systems, data storage, etc. as needed.
Communication, Advise & Report
- Serve as a knowledgeable ambassador for Lafene Health Center and Counseling & Psychological Services with many campus and community stakeholders.
- Represent the department within the Division of Academic Success & Student Affairs (DASSA) and the broader university community; contribute and serve on key university and DASSA committees; assist in the cultivation of advancement opportunities.
Reporting Relationships
Reporting to the Morrison Family Associate Vice President for Student Well-being, the Executive Director of Student Health and Counseling & Psychological Services functions as chief executive officer with overall responsibilities and authority for its operation. Works with department directors, committees, other University department directors, and other University departments as well as community organizations. Direct reports include the Medical Director, Associate Director, Director of Risk Management, and Nursing Manager for student health as well as the Associate Director for Counseling & Psychological Services.

Care is provided by board certified physicians and nurse practitioners, as well as nursing professionals. Students receive the same high quality care one would expect from their healthcare providers at home. Students will have access to coordinated and comprehensive services targeted at building and maintaining overall well-being. We believe good health is essential for academic success.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) within Lafene Health Center is a comprehensive, short term mental health service located on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. Current staff consists of licensed psychologists, licensed couple and family therapists, licensed professional counselors, licensed clinical social workers, psychology interns, and practicum students. CAPS is an APA accredited training site for doctoral interns and a practicum site for students in K-State's Couples and Family Therapy program and potentially other external degreed therapy programs within the mental health field. The principal function of CAPS is to support K-State students through the process of decision making, crisis intervention, and personal skill building. Education, outreach, and prevention are an important part of our function and operations. These endeavors are coordinated by and are conducted in concert with Lafene Health Center.

What You'll Need to Succeed
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- Seven years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree with a concentration in public health, healthcare administration, public administration, or any related field.
- 8 years of relevant experience in a field such as mental and/or physical healthcare services and administration
- Experience supervising full-time staff.
- Demonstrated effectiveness and ability to manage resources and develop financial plans.
- Experience in university healthcare services.
- Experience working in an integrated healthcare model.
- Experience as a systems thinker with a strategic mindset that aligns with the direction of an integrated student health and counseling office.
- Experience with efficiently managing and deploying fiscal, human, physical, and technology resources, including managing unit and institutional risk.
- Knowledge of local and national issues and trends in primary healthcare including best practices for university healthcare services and healthy campus initiatives.
- Knowledge of healthcare laws and regulations.
- Demonstrated commitment and leadership to foster a progressive and diverse work environment.
- Ability to inspire, train, manage, and effectively supervise staff consistent with university policies in a fair and equitable manner, including the ability to take corrective action.
- Ability to achieve goals; establish unit priorities; develop, plan, and implement short and long-range unit goals, formulate policy, and organize and allocate resources consistent with student health & counseling, DASSA, and University priorities and strategies.
- Ability to convey clinical information in understandable terms and in accessible methods to a variety of audiences, including students, parents, staff, faculty, and university leadership.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of medical billing and insurance reimbursement procedures.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the value of and a commitment to building a culture of holistic health for the entire campus community.
- Possess effective interpersonal and communication skills - to include strong consultative and collaborative skills, excellent presentation and writing skills, and proactive and responsive interpersonal skills.
- Possess strong negotiating skills, as well as the ability to analyze complex problems and implement creative solutions, including data-informed decision-making.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of and commitment to gender affirming care. Commitment to understanding the ways in which a patient’s needs differ across populations and how a patient’s identity/identities may affect their care or their experience within the healthcare system.
- Experience in or passion for mental health services with knowledge of best practices and ethics.
- Commitment to fostering a workplace culture of belonging, where diversity is celebrated, and equity is a core value.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and Electronic Health Records.
- Personal attributes and qualities of tact, discretion, and creativity.
- Ability to work evenings and weekend hours.
