The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discover.
Under the supervision of the Exhibition Curator, the Research Assistant will conduct primary research on content, texts, and objects related to the museum’s upcoming exhibition Director’s Inspiration: Bong Joon Ho. Scheduled to open in March 2025, the exhibition will provide a glimpse into Bong Joon Ho’s process as a filmmaker and the social, cultural, and political forces that have shaped his unique body of work. The candidate will generate summaries in English of primary source research material in Korean, including handwritten notes, storyboards, scripts, and articles. They will work closely with the Exhibition Curator on the selection of original material that they will then translate from Korean to English. The candidate will translate correspondence and oral communications from Korean to English and English to Korean and may also assist with translation and interpretation needs related to the exhibition opening and related programs. Additionally, they may conduct research on scholarly articles and texts in Korean and offer research and writing support for in-gallery didactics and related digital projects.
This is a temporary position through the end of March 2025. This position will work 15-20 hours per week.
You Will:
- Summarize and assess Korean language archival materials; translate selected materials.
- Translate correspondence from Korean to English and English to Korean.
- Create literature reviews and summarize texts and scholarly articles written in Korean.
- Conduct original research on Korean cinema history with a specific focus on Bong Joon Ho and New Korean Cinema; social, cultural, and political histories of Korea from the 1970s to the present; and related topics in world cinema history.
- Research media and images, including accurate credit and caption information.
- Support various aspects of content research and creation for the exhibition as well as related digital projects.
- Assist with exhibition checklist administration.
- Be responsible for select administrative duties related to the exhibition.
