Election Worker Specialist LEAD – $19.50/hour
 
The Registrar of Voters Vote-by-Mail Section is seeking positive people to work in a high-paced election work environment.

Requirements:  

• Must wear employee badge and access card.
• Must be able to be on her/his/their feet for the entire work shift.
• Must follow all health and safety protocols.
• Must represent the Registrar of Voters in a professional/non-partisan manner.
• Must have experience in training and leading others in customer service, researching information, data entry, answering phones and general clerical tasks as well as performing these duties.

 
Work hours:  Day shift working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Involves mandatory overtime during peak election periods. This includes the Saturday and Sunday the two weekends before the election. On Election Day work hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. depending on voter volume.

Have Knowledge of:

• General clerical tasks (sorting, filing, counting, inserting, and labeling)
• Basic mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
• Computer skills (ability to do data entry, retrieve data, and assist with emailing of voters), if required
• Use of phones, copy machines, microfiche reader/printer or other modern office equipment
• General safety practices with emphasis on proper and safe lifting techniques

 
Skills/Abilities:

• Must exhibit quality customer service skills with both external and internal customers, maintaining public confidence through our interactions by phone, correspondence (email) and when required, in person.
• Ability to learn and remember intricate and important details of San Diego County election procedures and to accurately convey this information to the public
• Ability to read, write, and speak English clearly; as well as understand and follow written and verbal instructions
• Complete all tasks with attention to details. 
• Ability to train, supervise and work well within a diverse team while demonstrating supportive behavior.
• Ability to provide guidance and give constructive feedback
• Handle and resolve difficult situations in a positive manner
• Communicate effectively with staff, public, and management
• Available to work throughout the election cycle including evenings and weekends. Overtime and schedule changes may occur with little to no advance notice, especially during the two (2) weeks prior to Election Day.
• Must be able to sit/stand for 10-12 hours per day; may need to go from one workstation to another
• Perform repetitive tasks, including computer data entry and verification of VBM applications
• Handle and resolve difficult situations in a positive manner using good judgement and accuracy
• Ability to setup, navigate and understand the proper use of electronic equipment used for election purposes (i.e., ePollbook (on an Apple I-pad), a Ballot Marking Device, and a county issued laptop, etc.)
• Treat co-workers, other County employees, representatives of outside agencies and members of the public with courtesy and respect

Examples of Duties:

1. Perform daily procedures, policies, and supply responsibilities.
2. Supervise election staff and ensure daily attendance of staff and report accurately
3. Address the public comments in-person, over the phone and/or email, including those of an opinionated and/or political nature
4. Develop, compile, and transmit statistical data on VBM processes 
5. Direct the setup/teardown of supplies and equipment 
6. Use computer terminal to retrieve/enter data
7. Activate access cards for voting equipment
8. Answer voter questions about mail voting and in-person voting, including the two weekends before and Election Day
9. Perform clerical tasks such as sorting, counting, inserting, labeling, and filing
10. Assist in maintaining the cleanliness and order of the office by keeping workstations and common areas clean by using cleaning tools or supplies, as well as, taking periodic breaks and lunches away from workstations
11. Assist in maintaining the security of the office and surrounding area by locking doors or cabinets and limiting access to authorized employees or personnel
12. Assist in supplies or equipment inventories

 
Essential physical characteristics:
Continuous upward and downward flexion of the neck.   Ability to stand or walk for 10-12 hours per day, repetitive use of the hands in data entry and data retrieval.   Continual: walking, standing, bending, and twisting of the neck, bending, and twisting of waist, simple grasping, reaching above and below shoulder level, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 30 lbs.
