Summary: Under general direction, incumbent(s) coaches sports activities to students, including creating game plans, observing practice drills, and explaining safety, rules, and history of the sport. Incumbent(s) schedules activities and tournaments, prepares area of use, and sets up appropriate staff needed to carry out practices and games.
Essential Functions:
- Creates game plans. Creates practice drills to implement game plan during competition. Observes students during practice to detect and correct mistakes. Oversees students during competition and tournaments.
- Schedules buses, staff, referees, custodial, and cafeteria that are needed to carry out practices and games. Ensures students are picked up by appropriate person(s). Prepares area of use (i.e. gym, field, etc.).
- Communicates expectations, status, schedules, and rules of the athletic program to the school administration, staff, parents, and students. Holds parent-athlete meetings.
- Explains and enforces safety rules and regulations. Lectures on history and purposes of sport. Explains method of keeping score. Explains and demonstrates use of apparatus and equipment.
- Utilizes health service protocols to ensure safety for students. Explains and demonstrates principles, techniques, and methods of regulating movement of body to achieve proficiency in activity.
- Ensures athletes meet grade and school behavior requirements. Demonstrates good sportsmanship.
- Announces and posts tryout information. Passes out and collects permission slips. Selects and posts members of the team.
- Attends meetings with other coaches in the District. Organizes competition and tournaments.
- Purchases, maintains, and repairs equipment and uniforms. Keeps inventory and records on all equipment and uniform purchases.
- Holds sports recognition events. Distributes awards and recognition.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
To be eligible for this position, an applicant must meet the following required qualifications. Verification of these required qualifications is necessary.
- High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) prior to being hired;
Preferred Qualifications:
It is preferred that applicant possesses the following preferred qualifications; however, the following qualifications are not required to be eligible for this position.
- Bachelors degree in Education;
- One year of teaching experience;
- Valid Arizona Department of Education Teacher Certificate.
