About the Job
We are seeking a full-time Technical Lead Aviation Systems Engineer at our office in Olathe, Kansas, to develop innovation solutions that delight our customers across aviation market segments. Working in close collaboration with Garmin Aviation leadership, you will apply your business and technical skills to create superior avionics products and services and lead cross-functional teams to bring these to market.
Responsibilities:
Essential Functions
- Leads definition and documentation of technical roadmap, schedule, and issue resolution aspects for a complex function across multiple products or product lines
- Creates/reviews system requirements, supporting rationale, system architectures, and technical description documentation for complex new products, functions, and/or systems
- Leads coordination efforts for collaborative requirement allocation and verification planning activities
- Performs complete trade-off analysis for complex new products and functions, following requirements standards and best practices
- Drives technical definition and development plans, including technical market research and trade-off analysis, for product definition and/or business development initiatives
- Develops concepts for complex products/features including identification of market need, technical and market feasibility analyses, system design, and product/feature definition
- Drives technical definition of new product/feature ideas for discussion in periodic roadmap reviews with leadership, and may drive technical alignment of roadmaps across product lines
- Researches emerging technologies which have potential to provide a competitive advantage
- Drives bench test planning and/or execution for complex new products/features, clearly documenting testing performed with clear and sufficient details about observed issues and feedback to development teams to ensure solutions are designed correctly
- Troubleshoots complex bench, simulator, and/or field issues, including identifying technical root cause and suggesting correction action for given problems using sound problem solving techniques
- Leads the analysis of system design, performance, safety, and/or security for complex new products/features in accordance with applicable processes/procedures
- Drives the improvement and/or creation of system-level processes, best practices, and/or tools for systems engineering, development assurance, and/or cybersecurity in accordance with regulations and industry standards
- Demonstrates broad understanding of Garmin’s business model, including operations, production, sales and marketing
- Mentors/provides guidance to less experienced Aviation Systems Engineers (1, 2 & Senior Engineers)
- Defines general approaches and specific solutions to technical problems considered state of the art and applies extensive technical expertise/analysis to all assigned projects
- Works collaboratively/professionally in a team environment with other Garmin associates to achieve goals
- Applies a sense of urgency, commitment, and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion
- Exemplifies Garmin’s Mission, Vision, Values and Quality Policy and proactively works to improve Garmin’s image and culture
- Participates in recruiting activities as assigned
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or another relevant technical field from a four-year college or university AND a minimum of 9 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
- Demonstrated expert knowledge and troubleshooting skills in one or more of the following technical areas:
- Systems Integration
- System Safety
- System Requirements
- System Security
- Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Must be team-oriented, possess a positive attitude and work well with others
- Possesses broad technical knowledge and skills in avionics systems and product development
- Possesses a broad understanding of Garmin’s processes and procedures
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in an Engineering field
- Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
- Demonstrated passion for and involvement in the aviation community
- Operational knowledge of Garmin or competitive avionics (e.g. pilot’s certificate with instrument rating)
- Extensive systems design and integration experience with consumer or aviation products
- Experience with avionics certification standards and guidance such as ARP 4754B or ARP 4761A
