GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accelerate the learning and acquisition of English in the language of math, language arts, science, and social studies in order to meet appropriate classroom expectations and graduation requirements. Candidate must provide cross-cultural information about the American school system and being a student in an American school for LEP (limited English proficient) students and their families. Serve as a liaison between the LEP student and all his/her classroom teachers, their families, and the school. Implement all ESOL procedures in order to be in compliance with legal responsibilities as indicated through Title III requirements. Provide leadership and consultation as the ESOL teacher to all staff in a school as assigned/directed by the Curriculum Specialist for WL and ESOL.

To screen all LEP students K-12 for ESOL Program eligibility;
- To implement all the procedures of the ESOL Program as prescribed in all manuals and in written communication such as notices and memos by the ESOL supervisor in order to be in compliance with the law and school division polices;
- To maintain appropriate and required documentation on every LEP student.
- To make recommendations about the appropriate accommodations for all types of formal assessments within the school division and state with the guidance of the ESOL Supervisor and a LEP Review Committee and communicating those recommendations to parents and staff;
- To serve as the ESOL advisor to an entire school staff by maintaining a high knowledge base of the latest research, laws, most effective practices, and issues in the field;
- To serve as a liaison between the ESOL student, his/her family and the school, especially with respect to cultural and language differences, and providing cross-cultural information to all parties that foster positive relationships;
- To provide rigorous and appropriate instruction to ESOL students that supports the acceleration of English and appropriate academic content and is aligned with the SOLs and HCPS curriculum;
- To monitor ESOL students' progress in all aspects of his/her academic schedule and their participation in all school activities and programs and promote and advocate for their participation as appropriate;
- To provide on-going staff development as is necessary and/or requested by the ESOL Supervisor on the second language acquisition and acculturation processes, sheltered instruction, the latest research, and most effective practices in teaching English language learners;
- To serve as a consultant to the ESOL Supervisor, school administration, and faculty for purposes of referrals to other programs such as Title 1, Special Education, Gifted and Talented, AP, IB, and others to assure neither the under nor over –representation of LEP students;
- To participate in all meetings within a school or district as assigned by the ESL Supervisor or where representation of ESOL is needed and appropriate such as school councils, grade level, mapping, multicultural and others;
- To maintain on-going communication with parents and the families of ESOL students in a meaningful way which may require the use of interpreters and translations;
- To maintain on-going communication with all mainstream teachers of the ESOL students and maintain a positive, nurturing, collaborative and consultative-type relationship; and
- To assist in mentoring and coordinating the work of any ESOL teaching assistant(s) as assigned.
- To prepare daily instruction and activities using the division's curriculum to assigned classes and to show evidence of preparation upon request of the supervisors;
- To assess students' learning on an ongoing basis and to alter instruction to meet group/individual needs;
- To develop summative tests of students' learning and uses results for further student instruction, grading, and placement;
- To develop and maintain a favorable psychological and physical environment that is conducive to effective learning;
- To maintain order and to encourage students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior within the classroom setting in accordance with division guidelines regarding pupil behavior management.
- To select and utilize materials appropriate to the students' instructional levels;
- To organize learning activities to achieve specific concepts;
- To demonstrate commitment to improving professional competence;
- To take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;
- To maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations;
- To perform other duties as assigned by the ESOL Supervisor in accordance with the school division's policies and practices.
