Overview
The Nexus Water Group team has an opportunity for a Tax Manager. This role supports the Senior Tax Manager with regards to the Company's income tax compliance, income tax provision, indirect tax compliance, and rate case filing assistance responsibilities across multiple states in the US. The Tax Manager is responsible for helping ensure that all internal and external filings and workpapers are prepared at a high level of quality.
Work Location and Schedule
This position will be located in Chicago, IL. Schedule is Monday through Friday.
What You'll do
- Team with external service provider to manage the preparation of federal and state income tax returns for organizational entities, including reviewing the returns for accuracy.
- Review internally prepared federal and state tax compliance and provision workpapers, especially the tax depreciation files, for technical accuracy for all organizational entities before submitting them to external service provider.
- Review quarterly estimate/extension calculations prepared by external service provider and work with the Senior Tax Analyst on coordinating timely payments.
- Review ASC740 income tax provision workpapers and financial statement tax footnotes prepared by external service provider for accuracy.
- Assist the finance department regarding calculating income tax provision within their utility rate case filings throughout the year.
- Participate in management of federal, state, local, and property tax audits and keep track of their status. This includes compiling necessary documentation, reports or analytics, and other activities as required.
- Review internally prepared sales and use tax, public utility tax, unclaimed property returns, and various other miscellaneous indirect tax filings.
- Review internally prepared personal property tax workpapers for accuracy before submitting them to external service provider.
- Review annual personal property tax renditions prepared by external service provider to ensure for accuracy and completeness.
- Participate in management of the property tax bill payment process prepared by external service provider.
- Review complex tax filings, analyzing the information in the filings, seek opportunities to reduce tax burdens, performing tax research, and correcting errors.
- Presents actionable recommendations regarding complex tax issues and tax strategies for multiple US states.
- Assist with the development and implementation of integrated and efficient tax policies and practices.
- Assist with special projects as necessary, such as tax research, tax planning strategies, forecasts, credits, mergers & acquisitions, etc.
- Foster and maintain relationships with other departments within the organization as well as governmental and outside tax advisors.
- Keep abreast of internal and external tax, accounting and financial developments.
- Take a significant role in the development of direct reports to support their engagement, growth, and goal achievement.
What You'll Bring
Experience
- A minimum of 4-5 years of preparing/reviewing multi-state and large consolidated group corporate income tax experience, including public accounting experience
Education and Certification
- Bachelor's degree in accounting
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
Nice to Have
- Previous experience in a regulated public utility environment
- Master's degree in taxation
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Must be proficient with the Microsoft Suite of applications, in particular having intermediate to advanced level Excel skills
- Good working knowledge of Thomson Reuters' ONESOURCE tax software or equivalent (ONESOURCE Income Tax and Tax Provision), Sage FAS fixed asset software or equivalent, and SAP or Oracle Fusion general ledger system or equivalent.
- Good working knowledge of ASC 740, Accounting for Income Taxes and operational taxes including property tax and sales and use tax.
- Tax Research Tools (RIA Checkpoint/CCH AnswerConnect) experience.
- Strong verbal communication and writing skills for documenting tax issues and their resolution in the context of tax provision and compliance.
- Ability to perform effectively in a high-volume, deadline-oriented environment, with minimal supervision and high attention to details.

- Ability to inspire trust and build and maintain successful relationships.
Work Environment
- Majority of time spent working indoors, under normal office conditions.
