BWXT is currently seeking a System Design Engineer - Primary System Team Lead for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!
BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven - be part of BWXT’s innovation hub. BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems.
The System Design Engineering – Primary System Team Lead will be responsible for supporting the development of project schedules and budgets for BANR primary systems in conjunction with Primary IPT leader and individual system design leads. Candidate will coordinate System Design activities with the rest of the project team and facilitate identification and resolution of technical challenges.

Job Description / Duties:
- Serve as the technical team leader for a cross functional system design team focused on systems that are primarily “mechanical.”
- Lead periodic cross functional team meetings, focusing on task tracking, issue identification & action tracking.
- Identify issues, monitor risks, and develop mitigation plans, including schedule and budget estimates.
- Lead efforts to identify and document needed project changes via decision brief process.
- Ensure scope changes are modeled in the project schedule.
- Drive for task completion and schedule adherence.
- Weekly team progress reporting.
- Coordinate with resource manager to ensure adequate staffing.
- Coordinate with IPT leader to ensure adequate budget to support staffing.
- Provide regular reporting and briefings to project team, including critical issues, risks, and schedule performance.
- Support team loadboard effort, as required.
Job Qualifications / Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Nuclear, or similar discipline) is required.
- Must possess at least fifteen (15) years of related work experience.
- Must possess a technical background in system design.
- Proficiency with standard Microsoft Office applications is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills is required.
- Must possess the ability to self-direct with minimal day-to-day supervision.
- Must be a strong team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
- Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.
Additional Desired Skillsets:
- Registered Professional Engineer.
- Experience in the nuclear industry.
- Experience in Agile project management.
- Familiarity with NRC and/or DOE requirements.
- Active DOD or DOE security clearance.

Pay: $114,000.00 - $165,000.00
The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $114,000.00 and $165,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
