Job DescriptionThe System Design Engineer is responsible for detailed broadcast system level design of a wide range of systems within the broadcast facility including Control Rooms, Studio Systems, Core Routing and Distribution, Post Production, Graphics and Transmission within NBC Sports’ Stamford, CT facility. This position will design systems supporting sports programming for studio and remote production for NBC Network, USA Network, NBC Olympics as well as sports programming on other NBC distribution channels. The position is responsible for the day-to-day support as well as participating in short and long-term strategic planning of all broadcast technology.
Responsibilities:
- Provide the highest possible “quality of service”, by providing technical and operations excellence for the facility enabling it to provide compelling programming and service to its viewers, clients and partners.
- Provide front line Engineering maintenance support of all the teleproduction systems working with and alongside a team of engineers.
- Develop conceptual and detailed designs for production systems that incorporate the needs of the production team and technology goals.
- Develop single-line drawings in AutoCad and prepare cable run sheets for projects.
- Assist with the procurement and installation of new systems.
- Assist with the implementation and commissioning of new systems, including the training of the engineering team and production technicians.
- Assist with detailed estimates to support new production initiatives and technology replacement cycles.
- Assist with the development of the business’ technology strategies including development of the capital/operating plans and management of multiple projects.
- Lead, mentor and develop the performance and efficiency of the Engineering team.
- Coordinate engineering technology and facility needs with the facilities team.
- Assist with department budgets, forecasts, plans and reports.
- Oversee the requisitions for replacement and new equipment and work with the Manager of System Engineering on the facility’s technological planning and development.
- Assist with projects within the area of responsibility and provide tracking of project budgets, schedules to ensure on time delivery of all projects and commitments.
- Ability to provide calm and consistent direction under the pressure of LIVE television shows.
- Ability to determine the root cause of an issue, orchestrate a solution and provide detailed written and oral descriptions of the issue to the client base and management.
- Ability to work overnights and weekends as required by Project and Plant support needs.
Basic Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Broadcast Production Technology, or equivalent work experience.
- 2+ years of background in live studio production and support.
- 2+ years of hands-on troubleshooting experience.
- Hands on direct knowledge of broadcast television technologies including Analog/SD/HDSDI Video, 5.1 multi-channel audio, Audio/Video signal routers, Control Room facilities, character generators/graphics playout systems, fiber optic distribution, video servers, VTRs, digital compression, satellite and RF systems and broadcast test and measurement equipment.
- Experience with IT based technologies/processes including Networking, SAN and NAS Storage architectures, Subnetting, asset management systems, server technologies including hardware architectures, real-time systems and custom application development.
- Networking and operating system trouble shooting skills in a broadcast video environment are essential.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- High proficiency in AutoCad.
- Proficiency in Excel, Visio, the MS Office Suite, and related applications.
- Willingness to travel and to work Overnight Schedules/7 days a week with short notice depending on production needs.
