The Sustainability Compliance Counsel will lead Thermo Fisher Scientific’s legal initiatives to improve compliance, awareness, and adherence to governing sustainability-related laws and regulations. This position reports to the Senior Director, Corporate and Securities Counsel and will work in conjunction with the Company's Legal, Operations, Finance, CSR, and Communications teams to guide and implement the Company’s sustainability programs. This individual is responsible for ensuring legal compliance, developing cross-functional processes and reporting mechanisms to meet established goals, and successfully implementing new initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide a unified view of global sustainability-related legal compliance requirements to ensure flawless adherence to regulations
- Take ownership of centralized program management function to deliver on required sustainability-related disclosure workstreams, and ensure governance oversight as appropriate
- Track, assess, and communicate new and emerging global legislation, regulations, and guidance on environmental, sustainability, and safety issues
- Review regulatory and industry trends and recommend risk mitigation strategies and program modifications
- Partner with business and Corporate EHS, GBS, finance, legal, and CSR teams on voluntary and mandatory ESG reporting
- Partner with subject matter experts to ensure internal controls and procedures for external reporting
- Serve as legal subject matter expert for sustainability-related matters, including leading due diligence for potential M&A targets
- Lead annual double materiality assessment process and partner with finance for external assurance
- Coordinate with corporate accounts and commercial legal teams to ensure consistency and accuracy of customer contract provisions related to ESG due diligence and reporting
- Assist in developing, updating, and implementing a comprehensive training program on complex sustainability-related matters and divisional/affiliate policies and procedures
- Lead the external reporting of program results in line with local regulations
- Prepare and give updates on progress to company leadership, group leadership, and executive governance teams.
Minimum Requirements / Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Juris Doctorate required
- 5+ years’ experience with demonstrable experience with sustainability-related matters or corporate disclosure within complex, matrixed, global organizations
- Strong proficiency in MS-Office tools
Experience / Qualifications/Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to set and manage priorities, resources, and performance targets for a global organization
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Team-focused with exceptional analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to absorb constantly evolving regulatory and operational environment
- Proven track record of developing productive relationships and navigating within a matrix organization
- Process improvement background (PPI, Lean, Six Sigma, etc) preferred
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information
