Survey Instrument Tech
Summary: Under basic supervision, operates technical surveying instruments and equipment to gather fieldwork data to measure the City for Public Works construction projects, and for use in defining plats.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Will work primarily in the field on control, topographic surveys, and pipeline surveys as Instrument Man / Rodman of a one, two or three-person field crew
- Cut and remove brush and undergrowth for line of sight
- Performs mathematical calculations and field checking of field data
- Reads and understands plans and specifications
- Know basic sources of measurement errors
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Dig ground using a pick, shovel and other hand tools to search for and locate survey monuments
- Hold and plum rod in obtaining elevations and distances
- Drive stakes to set grades on construction projects
- Provide quality seamless customer service
- Know, understand and demonstrate safe working/operating methods of assigned tools and equipment
- Transports and sets up the equipment necessary to survey land and prepare a job site
- Loads vehicles before heading out to the construction site
- Capable of taking initiative without direct supervision while assisting with survey procedures
- Supports the divisional operations with regular and timely attendance.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- One year of computer experience preferred. No experience needed, will train.
Knowledge of:
- Basic math skills.
- Basic record keeping and records management practices.
Skill in:
- Operating a personal computer.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
- Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
License and certification requirements: A valid Texas State Driver's License is required.
Physical demands and working environment: Work is performed in a standard office environment and outdoors in the City performing field work.
