Job Summary:
Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and Surgical Team members, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during general surgical procedures. This role requires a thorough understanding of the assigned surgical procedures and the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team. The Surgical Technologist also provides support related to patient preparation, transport, building services, and assists the surgical care team with specific patient care duties to ensure safety and comfort. Additionally, the position involves responding to emergent situations according to established procedures.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
• Scrubs in for general surgical procedures.
• Prepares the operating room by setting up tables, instruments, and supplies according to the type of surgery.
• Ensures the proper functioning of instruments and equipment before use and reports any needed repairs.
• Follows established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance standards, safety, environmental guidelines, and infection control measures.
• Displays cost-consciousness in the opening of sterile supplies and in the handling of surgical instruments.
• Responds to emergent situations as outlined in established procedures and notifies the appropriate personnel.
• Delivers necessary supplies to units and ancillary departments.
• Maintains a safe and clean working environment, keeping rooms free from clutter, cleaning and stocking rooms, and returning equipment and supplies to designated storage locations.
• Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients while demonstrating sensitivity to their care and privacy.
• Maintains confidentiality of patient and departmental care information.
• Engages in discussions with the Unit Manager/Supervisor regarding job enrichment and career progression.
• Completes required education promptly and participates in ongoing department-specific educational programs.
• Actively participates in audit monitors and departmental task forces.
• Supports administrative and departmental governance changes related to the job role and operations.
• May train or precept new employees in the Surgical Technologist I role within core assignments.
• Assists the RN in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients from the operating room.
• Collaborates with leadership to adjust par levels for efficient supply management.
• Recognizes the importance of continuing education and participates accordingly.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Comments:
At least 1 year of experience required (orthopedic experience preferred).
