The Operating Room Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting thephysician with advanced tasks during surgical procedures. The OR ST must be ableto work under high pressure in a fast paced environment. You will apply goodinterpersonal and communication process utilizing verbal and non-verbal skills toachieve organizational service goals of customer satisfaction and a positive workenvironment. The position requires the ability to be conscientious, organized, andorderly and the ability to respond quickly to the needs of the surgeon and patient.
Responsibilities
1. Prepares for surgical procedures by pulling appropriate instruments andsupplies. Reviews case carts for correct instruments and supplies; ensures goodworking order of instruments. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment andmakes minor adjustments or calls biomedical equipment staff. Checks scheduleand plans ahead for upcoming surgical case needs.
2. Anticipates the surgeon's needs. Scrubs and provides instruments, sutures, andother sterile supplies during surgical procedure. Passes instruments and retractstissue.
3. Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautionsthroughout the procedure. Participates in counting sharps, instruments andsponges. Prepares instruments for cleaning following each case. Disposes ofsharps and trash appropriately in designated areas.
4. Ensures that all surgeon preference cards are accurate.
5. Assists with OR turnover between cases. Participates in stocking, replenishingsupplies and cleaning operating rooms.
6. Participates in or leads the training and orientation of surgical staff andstudents, as assigned.
7. This position follows safety procedures in regard to medication labeling,appropriate handling of specimens, appropriate handling of sharps, time-outprocedure, radiation and laser safety, infection control, assembling anddisassembling instruments.
Minimum education:
Surgical technologist certification program
Preferred Education:
Minimum experience:
1 year of experience in a surgical technologist role
Preferred experience:
1 year in Level 1 trauma OR setting
Required licenses/certifications:
Surgical technologist certification and Basic life support certification
Hours per week: 36 hours
