The Role:
The Electronics Repair Technician is responsible for diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing surface mount circuit boards used in electronic equipment. This role involves working with advanced soldering and rework techniques to replace faulty components, ensuring the functionality and reliability of electronic assemblies. The technician must possess strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform diagnostic tests on faulty surface mount assemblies to identify defects and root causes.
- Utilize soldering and rework equipment to repair surface mount components, including but not limited to resistors, capacitors, integrated circuits (ICs), and other SMT devices.
- Repair Circuit Board defects based on AOI Results
- Conduct visual inspections of PCB assemblies to detect and rectify soldering defects, bridging, tombstoning, and other assembly issues.
- Interpret assembly drawings, schematics, and work instructions to ensure accurate repair procedures are followed.
- Collaborate with production and quality assurance teams to implement corrective actions and process improvements to prevent recurring defects.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs performed, including documentation of test results, component replacements, and repair techniques.
- Adhere to industry standards and best practices for SMT rework and repair, including compliance with ESD precautions and safety protocols.
- Assist in the training of junior technicians and production staff on surface mount repair techniques and procedures.
- Keep abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends related to surface mount assembly processes and equipment.
Working Conditions: The role may require working in a manufacturing or repair facility, often in a laboratory or workshop environment. The technician may need to work with potentially hazardous materials and equipment, requiring adherence to safety protocols and guidelines.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Experience: Prior experience in surface mount circuit board repair or electronics assembly is preferred.
- Experience repairing Surface Mount components
- Experience repairing Through Hole components
- Familiarity with IPC-A-610 quality standards for repair, certification is a plus.
- Soldering Skills: Proficiency in surface mount soldering and desoldering techniques, including reflow soldering, hot air rework, and hand soldering using soldering irons and stations.
- Electronic Troubleshooting: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve electronic issues efficiently.
- Component Identification: Ability to identify various surface mount components, packages, and footprints, including interpreting datasheets and specifications.
- Attention to Detail: Precision and accuracy in handling delicate components and performing intricate soldering and rework tasks.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of electronic circuits, PCB layouts, and electronic assembly processes.
- Communication Skills: Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members, engineers, and supervisors, providing clear updates on repair progress and technical recommendations.
- Continuous Learning: Willingness to stay updated with the latest advancements in surface mount technology, equipment, and repair techniques through training and self-study.
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional technical education or certification in electronics repair or soldering is advantageous.
