Responsibilities Incumbent is responsible for independently assisting Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) by supervising legal support staff and directly providing and coordinating a wide variety of technical legal assistance services. Duties include: Performs extensive searches of records, reference and/or historical material. Independently researches, evaluates, and coordinates information to establish the facts and issues of specific litigation cases. Reviews incoming material and determines the need for correspondence and legal documents such as motions, orders, pleadings and subpoenas. Assists in conducting factual research on individuals and companies using computerized databases and other sources. Prepares and proofreads a wide variety of legal documents, many of which are voluminous and complex in format. Guides other legal assistants in specific tasks and job techniques and shares work samples, reference materials and policy guidance. Distributes work assignments with complete authority to direct employees on various work assignment changes due to vacancies, absences, or workload increases. Distributes tasks to employees based on the difficulty and nature of the assignments involved. Sets deadline dates for work performed by subordinates and advises employees on administrative changes. Creates and provides oral and/or written instructional guidelines for the performance of tasks. -Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-9: To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-8 level in Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as performing advanced legal support work; examining cases for completeness, adequacy and consistency with applicable laws and regulations; supporting cases of varying complexity and which are not pre-screened; providing legal assistance support to cases requiring extensive searches of records, reference, or historical material; preparing a wide variety of legal documents needed for litigation, e.g., complaints and exhibits; independently researching, evaluating and coordinating information to establish facts and issues of specific cases; providing substantive assistance provided to attorneys in planning legal strategies; using a wide range of office software applications to prepare complex documents containing tables or graphs and use online legal resources to obtain information accessible over the Internet. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
