SUMMARY:
The Technician/CAD Supervisor oversees five design technicians that support the Engineering/Capital Delivery/Design Center department who's primary function is to provide engineering services and support to safely execute capital projects on scope, schedule, and budget. This position is responsible for overseeing the development of design plans for capital projects using CAD systems, which are utilized to secure permits, define work scope for bidding and construction, and serve as permanent record for the asset, developing and maintaining standard details and providing field data collection support to include conducting field topographic surveys. This position requires advanced CAD competence and manages the departments CAD resources (software/hardware), develops, sets and maintains CAD technical, and procedural standards, ensures standard adherence, identifies and implements process improvements, creates and implements CAD training, ensures quality and timely completion of design drawings, and establishes the overall strategic direction for our CAD/technician department company wide. The position reports to the Design Center Manager and is located in San Jose, California.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Supervises staff, including prioritizing and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, overseeing training and development, and making hiring, termination and disciplinary recommendations.
Develops, sets, and maintains company CAD standards and procedures to include CAD customizations and other enhancements to maximize efficiency.
Coordinates project designs by assigning them to staff (including self when appropriate), overseeing and tracking project designs to assure completion on schedule.
Continually assesses team workload versus capacity to ensure service and timely project completion and recommends alternative approaches as needed to achieve schedules.
Works with other Technician Supervisors to shift work amongst engineering offices as necessary to balance workload and ensure timely completion.
Develops and tracks metrics to ensure workload balance, timely completion, and overall efficiency.
Reviews design drawings for quality and conformance with design and CAD standards prior to approval.
Trains and develops staff on AutoCAD, Company drawing processes and standards, design procedures, and water industry regulatory standards.
Develops long-range vision, mission, and strategic plan for the CAD/Technician team.
Works with the Information Technology department to purchase and maintain CAD PC hardware.
Manages CAD software (AutoCAD, Map3D, Civil3D and other related programs) to include budgeting, purchasing, licensing, installation, updates, and support.
Budgets, purchases, and maintains the department's large format printers and supplies.
Coordinates and manages the group's field surveying support function that includes topographical surveys, construction staking and office processing of survey data for drawing creation.
Participates in and supports the Company's Continuous Improvement program and projects
Performs other similar duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Associates degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design/ Architectural Drafting or a minimum of five years of related experience.
Minimum five years of experience in design and drafting for civil/electrical/mechanical engineering disciplines with AutoCAD, Civil3D and related software.
Five or more years of experience in a similar role desirable
Supervision experience desirable
Construction experience with water utility projects desirable
Experience working with public agencies, consultants, and contractors desirable
Proficiency with total station land surveying equipment desirable
Water Distribution and Water Treatment Operator Certifications desirable
Valid California State Driver License
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of supervisory principles, practices, and techniques
Advanced knowledge and proficiency with AutoCAD
Advanced knowledge of drawing, design processes and standards
Basic knowledge of water system function
Detailed knowledge of piping materials and installation
