Job Title: Supervisor of Transportation
Contract Length: 260 days

Job Summary
Plans, directs, coordinates, and oversees all functions pertaining to the operation and maintenance of the division transportation department. This includes personnel, equipment, and bus shop. The prime concern is safe, efficient, economical transportation of student between home and school on a regular schedule, and between other destinations within or outside the division boundaries on a special scheduling basis.
Essential Duties
- Establish all regular and special needs bus routes, schedules, and stops. Develop route maps for drivers, school, etc. as appropriate.
- Arrange and coordinate student transportation activities with school officials, department heads, and other interested groups or individuals for regular school days, summer school, summer programs, special program, and special events.
- Participate along with school official in parent/student conferences in an effort to resolve or prevent misconduct and unsafe conditions, which involve the transportation system.
- Recommend procurement of additional or replacement buses and other vehicles and disposal of buses and other vehicles declared surplus.
- Assist in budget preparation and administer the expenditure of funds as allocated.
- Assign emergency calls on vehicle failure and assist on emergency calls when needed.
- Collect data and develop all required school bus transportation-oriented reports and insures their submission on a timely basis.
- Ensure compliance with the codes and pertinent policies regarding training, licensing, registration, and operational permits.
- Recruit, recommend for employment, and evaluate all transportation department personnel including school bus drivers, aides, mechanics, and helpers.
- Develop a school bus driver’s manual based upon State statues and school board policies, establishing regulations for driver personnel in the operation of school buses.
- Scheduled and coordinate annual inspection of all buses by the Transportation Department and State Department of Education as applicable.
- Provides instruction in management of special needs students.
- Provides for a pool of adequately trained and informed substitute bus drivers.
- Coordinates and conducts in-service bus driver training and traffic safety program.
- Supervise general maintenance program with specific attention to safety inspections for school buses and other vehicles.
- Establish performance standards and supervise operational care, service, and maintenance of all vehicles within the department.
- Conduct accident investigations and submits accident report to appropriate law enforcement and insurance agencies.
- Evaluate safety of road conditions during inclement weather and provide timely information to the Superintendent.
- Order materials, supplies, and equipment necessary to operate the transportation department.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Experience in an organization having full maintenance and operation of transportation services.

- Budgeting, record keeping.
- Must be knowledgeable of safety standards, laws, rules, regulation, policies, and procedures relating to pupil transportation.
- Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license with a commercial driver’s license (CDL).
- Demonstrate ability to establish cooperative relations with other division staff members, subordinates, students, and parents.
- Ability to operate all vehicle types used in the school division.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to do skilled mechanical work.

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
