Middlesex County is seeking a full-time Supervising Mechanic for the Light Equipment Garage supporting the Division of Public Works within the Department of Transportation. Duties will include Supervising the workflow in the Light Equipment Garage to ensure timely and efficient repairs to light equipment vehicles, and grounds/parks equipment. The Supervising Mechanic is responsible for employee evaluations and recommending the hiring, promoting and/or disciplinary actions of employees. Works directly with the service writer for scheduling of all department repairs. In addition, the Supervising Mechanic will perform diagnostics, and repairs on light equipment grounds/parks equipment when deemed necessary.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Vehicle Maintenance & Repair:
Perform scheduled maintenance and repairs on County vehicles, including engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and other mechanical components. Use diagnostic tools and equipment to assess and repair problems.
• Supervision & Staff Development:
Supervise the work operations of the maintenance team, providing advice, guidance, and support on tasks. Oversee employee performance, providing evaluations and recommendations for hiring, promotions, or discipline as necessary.
• Diagnostic & Testing Equipment Usage:
Utilize a wide range of diagnostic and testing equipment, such as engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, and tachometers, to identify mechanical issues and troubleshoot problems.
• Technical Documentation & Specifications:
Consult technical manuals, diagrams, and schematics to perform repairs and modifications on automotive components. Use this documentation to ensure repairs align with industry standards and safety regulations.
• Component Disassembly & Reassembly:
Disassemble, rebuild, adjust, reassemble, reinstall, and align various automotive components and assemblies, ensuring all vehicles are in optimal condition.
• Maintenance Management Systems:
Monitor and record repairs and maintenance using the County’s Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for accurate tracking and reporting.
• Team Collaboration:
Collaborate with other departments and supervisors to ensure that vehicles are available and operational as needed. Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to maintain a smooth workflow.
Qualifications:
• Education and Experience:
At least 4 years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair. Completion of automotive technology training from an accredited community college or vocational school is preferred.
• Licensing:
Must possess a valid NJ driver’s license. A CDL (B) with air brake endorsement is required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
• ASE Certification:
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in one of the following specialties from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence may be substituted for the formal training:
- A-1 Engine Repair
- A-6 Electrical/Electronic Systems
- A-8 Engine Performance
ASE certifications are highly recommended but not required.
• Diagnostic & Testing Skills:
Ability to use a wide range of diagnostic and testing equipment, including electrical, electronic, light, and pressure types (e.g., engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, vacuum and fuel pump testers, injector testers, ignition timers, tachometers, ammeters, and ohmmeters).
• Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS):
Knowledge of CMMS is highly recommended for tracking maintenance and repairs.
• Technical Expertise:
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and schematics for equipment repair and modification.
• Supervisory Skills:
Proven ability to supervise staff, including providing work assignments, guidance, and performance evaluations. Skilled in making recommendations for personnel actions, such as hiring, promotion, and disciplinary actions.
• Mechanical Skills:
Ability to disassemble, rebuild, adjust, reassemble, reinstall, and align various automotive components and assemblies.
• Knowledge of Supervisory Methods:
Familiarity with supervisory principles, methods, and best practices, and the ability to effectively lead and manage team operations.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting and moving heavy equipment and to perform tasks that require standing, bending, and working in confined spaces.
