General Summary
An On-call substitute position, Health and Safety Substitutes will collaborate with Front Desk teams to ensure that all tasks/duties are completed in the absence of the Health & Safety Coordinator. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, responding to emergency situations and administering first aid, and managing the health & safety of students/staff.
A Day in the Life of a Health & Safety Substitute
Your day will vary. Generally, a substitute's day follows this format:
- Check in with the school's main office for assignment
- Review Health & Safety plans before students arrive
- Follow the Health & Safety Coordinator's detailed instructions
- Tidy up the Health & Safety Office at the end of your assignment
- Check out with the main office
Essential Functions
Health and Safety
- Collaborate and assist students and faculty with (health issues, student health records, emergency preparedness response, building/grounds environments, building facilities, etc.) for the purpose of identifying issues and/or providing recommendations for improving safety and accessibility
- Follow school policy to manage all health and safety communications
- Adhere to all health and safety policies as assigned by the School, including playground rules for all grades
- Administer health and medical related care for the purpose of supporting the health and wellbeing of staff & students
Accident Management and Medical Care
- Managing the accident report process, to include accident investigation, reporting and completing form, communicating to families and appropriate staff
- Responsible for accurate and timely data entry to track accident type and individual involved
- Follow and implement the school's policy for medical authorizations provided by parents and/or physicians for student health care or medication distribution
- Provide comfort and reassurance to ill or injured students / staff.
- Administer first aid to staff/students for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children in accordance with State laws and school policies.
- Assess the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize first aid procedures. Assist with retrieving emergency contact information for students, faculty or staff
- Responsible for communicating to emergency services or to physician about the patient's condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment
Other Tasks
- Assigning and communicating before-care duties and after-care duties
- Cover breaks and lunches for other administrative employees as needed
- Other duties as reasonably requested

- Comfortable proactively learning new technology and suggesting technology related solutions Advanced skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) Experience with Google Suite (Gmail, Google docs, Google calendar)
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
- During peak activity periods, this position may be required to work in excess of 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week
- Capable of quickly traveling to multiple locations on school campus including up and down hills, lifting or otherwise carrying 40 pounds, traveling up/down flights of stairs, standing and sitting for long durations, typing for continuous hours on a computer keyboard, and reading information on a computer screen.
Required Qualifications
- High school or GED
- CPR Certified
- First Aid Certified
- 1-3 years experience working with young children
- Communicate fluently in written and spoken English
- Licensed through the Oregon Early Learning Division Office of Child background check
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified as an EMT, Medical Assistant, or LVN.
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
- Bilingual: Communicate fluently in written and spoken English and any of the languages taught at the school: Spanish, Japanese or Chinese
- Comfortable in an international community
