QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of:
Safe driving practices.
Provisions of the State Motor Vehicle code and Kentucky Administration Regulations applicable to
the operation of vehicles transporting students.
First aid practices.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
2. Ability to:
Operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and
discharging students.
Maintain order and discipline among students while driving a school bus.
Maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition.
Recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action.
Learn designated bus routes including stops and traffic hazards.
Maintain routine records.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Learn, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Assist in loading and unloading handicapped children as necessary.
3. Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma, high school certificate of completion, G.E.D.
Certificate, or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law and
one year experience in the operation of a motor vehicle.
4. Licenses and Other Requirements:
Valid Kentucky Commercial Class B driver's license, including passenger endorsement; School Bus
Certificate; must pass driving record check.
5. Must pass an annual physical, as demonstrated by a physical form completed by a doctor that may be
designated by the Board, and a tuberculosis test as required and specified by Kentucky laws and
regulations.
6. Such additional qualifications as the Superintendent or Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent or Transportation Supervisor
SUPERVISES: N/A
BASIC FUNCTION: Operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students; provide safe and efficient transportation for District students to and from school, special events and field trips; perform daily inspections and operator maintenance of vehicle; assist in the loading and unloading of physically and mentally handicapped students as necessary.
REPRESENTATIVE PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
NOTE: All references in ( ) may be found in the Henry County Public Schools Bus Drivers Manual.
1. Drives a school bus over designated routes in accordance with specified time schedules and in accordance with regulations and laws related to pupil transportation in the State following specified schedules; transports students to and from school, special events and field trips. (See School Driver's Guide.) (See Route Information.)
2. Picks up and discharges students, under varying weather conditions, at established bus stops; reports incidents which affect the safety of students.
3. Maintains bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections and driver maintenance including cleaning windows, mirrors and bus interior; checks and maintains fuel, oil and water levels; checks brakes, brake lights and doors; reports mechanical defects and malfunctions to appropriate personnel. 4. Maintains order and discipline among students on bus following District policies and procedures regarding disciplining of students and contact with school officials, parents and the public; interacts with parents regarding questions, concerns and disputes. (See Student Misconduct Procedure.)
5. Performs emergency bus evacuation drills as required by Kentucky Administration Regulations.
6. Transports physically handicapped and mentally handicapped children to and from designated locations; lifts and secures wheel chairs; assists in the loading and unloading of handicapped children as necessary.
7. Observes applicable local, State and federal policies, procedures and guidelines.
8. Fuels and cleans exterior and interior of buses including picking up debris, sweeping and mopping floor, wiping upholstery and cleaning headlights. (See Monthly Bus Inspection/Cleanliness Form.
9. Maintains records concerning vehicle maintenance, miles driven and number of children transported and other related matters; prepares student conduct, incident and accident reports.
10. Attends safety and preventive emergency meetings when required.
11. Utilizes two-way radio for bus to bus and bus to base communication.
12. Performs first aid according to established guidelines and procedures.
13. Responsibilities Specific to HCPS Assignment:
A. Transports only authorized students. (See Student Roster)
B. Reports all accidents, completes required reports, and submits these reports in triplicate (including time sheets, gas and oil reports, school trip record, accident reports, and other reports
as provided in the Henry County Public Schools Bus Drivers Manual.)
C. Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the bus. (See School Board Policies on Smoking and Alcohol, Rules and Regulations Form.
D. Attends all designated in-service days; attends with due compensation any additional in-service training other than that specified in the contract if requested by the school district.
E. Attends and completes a Henry County Public Schools first aid course for bus drivers or provides evidence of having received comparable training.
F. Gives sufficient notice to the proper authority when an excused absence is necessary, and misses no work with unexcused absences; notifies the proper authority that he/she cannot report for work when his/her physical condition is such that it would impair his/her ability to carry out assigned duties and
responsibilities.
G. Submits at any time to an examination (written, oral, and/or behind the wheel) to substantiate to the Superintendent the qualifications of the driver to carry out his/her duties.
H. Supervises the seating of the pupils on the bus and ensures that
the seating capability of the bus is fully utilized; notifies the Superintendent immediately if the bus is still overloaded after following this procedure.
I. Attends disciplinary hearings and other meetings as requested by the Director of Student Services, principal, and/or Superintendent.
J. Brings the bus in for mechanical repairs on a monthly basis, according to the preventive maintenance calendar or as requested by the transportation team leader.
14. Performs such other tasks as may be assigned by the Director of Student Services or the Superintendent.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Working hours as specified in the assigned route. Salary and work year to be established by the Superintendent and the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
