McKenzie Electric Cooperative (MEC) is currently seeking qualified candidates for Substation Technician. The selected candidate for this full-time, benefited position is responsible for performingand overseeing the installation, testing, maintenance and operation of substation equipment, control devices, regulators, and other protective equipment and apparatus devices. To ensure safe, reliable, and quality distribution power for McKenzie Electric Cooperative (MEC) members. Performs work according to established maintenance, operation and environmental plans to meet system integrity standards and environmental compliance.
Reporting to and receiving assignments from the Substation Manager, this role will provide services in a timely, accurate and high quality manner, while fostering positive working relationships within the office. The selected candidate will support the mission of MEC and make our members first priority.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform the maintenance and operation of substation and switching station; this includes installing, calibrating, testing, inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining substation equipment and line devices.
- Maintains and repairs OCRs, regulators and other such devices by performing tests and repairs as directed or required.
- Responsible for performing operations for installing, relocating, repairing or removing distribution protective equipment and associated devices, capacitors, and related equipment and supports.
- Handles preliminary arrangements to the execution of field work, such as reviewing work order specifications, planning execution of work, coordinating with crews, arranging for clearances, de-energizing lines, operating switches or disconnects, grounding lines or equipment and observing that protective devices are used.
- Establishes maintenance, operations, and environmental plans. To maintain, test, and replace substation and sectionalizing equipment, and other electrical apparatus devices on the electrical system.
- Documents, organizes, and maintains related maintenance records as required.
- Assists, directs and/or performs new construction on new and existing substations. Coordinates work with Engineering Services and Operations Departments as assigned.
- Assists and performs switching functions along with another qualified representative on transmission and distribution apparatus, as directed in compliance with the safe work practices handbook.
- Assists in the resolution of member usage complaints, and power quality issues by conducting energy usage and power quality audits as requested.
- Collects metering data and performs voltage surveys per defined plans and data requirements for system monitoring and planning.
- Assists in developing and updating related environmental plans. Monitors PCB's oil-based enclosures, if any, within the system. Tests and document oil spills on Cooperative property.
- Prepare field reports on pertinent tasks performed. Completes all required change management and other documentation for such activities as compliance and regulatory requirements.
Education/Experience: Participation in a qualified substation maintenance course equal to an associate degree; proven ability to apply electrical theory. Eight years' experience in electrical construction and maintenance is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Certifications/Licenses: An ideal candidate will hold a journeyman electrician's license or has completed an approved Lineman apprenticeship program. A valid ND Class A commercial driver's license is required.
Knowledge:
- Understanding of National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code and OSHA regulations.
- Skills and knowledge to test and calibrate single and three phase meters.
- Familiar with relaying, oil analysis, RUS specifications and materials. System knowledge and interconnection agreements.
- Must be proficient in the use of various electrical and electrical testing equipment.
- Proficient with substation maintenance and operations, safe operation of transmission and distribution system.
- Ability to utilize a variety of technical based software.
- Must have the ability to diagnose and proceed with necessary repairs and maintain varied and complex electric equipment.
- Completion of Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) switching procedures.
- Basic understanding of how PC based Window's software operates.
