**The College of Education has an outstanding opportunity for a Student Success Coordinator to join their team.**
The mission of the Brotherhood Initiative (BI) at the University of Washington Seattle is to empower men of color undergraduates to thrive on campus and graduate prepared for a lifetime of leadership, service, and success. The BI is a collaborative partnership among the College of Education, Undergraduate Academic Affairs, Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity, Division of Student Life, Enrollment Management, and the Graduate School. Guided by a steering committee of UW staff, faculty, and students, the BI will achieve its mission by utilizing research-based strategies to provide multiple pathways for males of color in college to engage in academic, civic, and leadership opportunities, and also access networks and resources that will advance their success - and through this process, develop a learning community of scholars. The primary goals of the BI are to: 1) Increase enrollment, persistence, and graduation rates for males of color by developing a cohort-based support system that will holistically promote the academic, personal, and leadership development of male students of color at the University of Washington; 2) Conduct interdisciplinary research about factors that promote the success of young men of color, in order to contribute to the literature and research available on the experience of underrepresented men of color within higher education, and 3) Inform policy and practice in working with males of color across a range of educational institutions, community organizations, and government agencies.
The Student Success Coordinator will provide direct support to BI students and work collaboratively with the BI team to assist with implementing the programmatic and academic support components of the BI. This includes supporting the development and implementation of the courses that are part of the BI curriculum, designing and implementing programming and events for BI students, and assisting with the recruitment and selection process for prospective BI participants.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
The Student Success Coordinator will assist with providing academic and cocurricular support to BI students and collaborate with other student services offices across campus to direct students to the resources most appropriate for their interests and needs. In collaboration with the BI instructional team, the Student Services Specialist will also create and implement academic and cocurricular programs and activities to support the primary goals and outcomes of the BI, including but not limited to mentoring, leadership development, and community engagement. The Student Success Coordinator will ensure that these programs and activities are aligned with the BI seminar curriculum for each cohort level. Additional details are described below:
Academic Support and Student Development
+ Serve as academic support specialist and advocate for BI students, focusing primarily on first-year students.
+ Work closely with EOP advisors to ensure that first-year students are academically on-track, and to provide additional support when needed.
+ Provide first-year students with referrals to resources on campus and within the community.
+ Work with BI course instructors to track academic progress of first-year students each quarter.
+ Work with BI course instructors to advise and prepare first-year students for engagement in experiential learning, internships on and off campus, service learning, study abroad, and other academic opportunities.
+ Work with BI staff to maintain partnerships with other campus offices (i.e. OMAD, UAA, academic departments), in order to facilitate collaborative student support and connect students with academic and co-curricular opportunities.
+ Promote campus and community events, as well as resources of interest, to BI students.BI Programming
+ Manage event planning and coordination for BI professional development workshops, health and wellness workshops, and other community building events.
+ Assist with planning and coordination for large-scale BI events including welcome orientation, new scholars retreat, and end of year and graduation celebration.
+ Design and manage BI peer mentor program.
+ In conjunction with other BI staff, develop communications with faculty, students, staff, and outside organizations and colleges to disseminate program information, build partnerships, and enhance opportunities for BI students.
+ Assist with implementing new and existing outreach efforts and vehicles, including but not limited to K-12 outreach, BI's positive social change challenge, civil discourse project, ongoing maintenance and updating of BI social media accounts; ensure efforts align with program goals and propose revisions to outreach strategies as appropriate.Cohort Recruitment & Selection
+ Assist with recruiting prospective BI students through multiple outreach channels including social media, networking events, and outreach with schools and community partners.
+ Assist with BI application process, including working with the selection committee to read applications, schedule and conduct interviews, and select participants.
+ Work with prospective students by phone, letter and email communication throughout the recruitment & selection process, with a high degree of program knowledge and professionalism.Instructional Support
+ Assist the BI instructional team with implementation of the first-year seminar, to include leading some classroom activities and discussions on mentoring, leadership development, and community engagement.
+ Coordinate and support BI peer mentors who are working with students in the first-year seminar.
+ Provide feedback to BI students on various assignments in the first-year seminar.Other duties as assigned **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
+ Bachelor's Degree in education or a related field and 2-3 years of experience in education and/or program administration. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
+ A demonstrated awareness and understanding of concerns and issues experienced by underrepresented and marginalized populations.
+ Direct experience working with students in an educational setting.
+ Demonstrated ability to serve as an effective advocate for student success.
+ Excellent communication skills and ability to prioritize and reprioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
+ Informed judgment and maintenance of a high level of confidentiality.
+ Demonstrated ability to take initiative and follow through on independent projects. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Master's Degree in education or a related field.
+ Familiarity with issues of educational equity, college persistence, gender and masculinity.
+ Prior experience in advising, programming and/or recruitment with ethnically diverse, low-income, and/or first-generation college student populations.
