A DAY IN THE LIFE
A Structural Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of structures like buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure, ensuring their safety and stability by calculating loads, selecting appropriate materials, and creating detailed plans to withstand various forces like wind, earthquakes, and gravity, while collaborating closely with architects and construction teams to meet project requirements and building codes; key tasks include performing structural analysis, creating 2D and 3D models, calculating stresses and strains, specifying construction materials, and conducting site inspections to guarantee structural integrity throughout the building process.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Design and Analysis:
Develop structural designs for new buildings and renovations, analyzing loads, stresses, and stability using engineering software to ensure structures can withstand intended use and environmental factors.
- Material Selection:
Choose appropriate construction materials based on strength, durability, cost, and project requirements.
- Calculation and Modeling:
Perform complex calculations to determine load-bearing capacity, using computer-aided design (CAD) software to create 2D and 3D models of structures.
- Code Compliance:
Ensure designs adhere to local building codes and safety regulations.
- Collaboration:
Work closely with architects, engineers from other disciplines, contractors, and project managers to coordinate design elements and construction details.
- Site Visits:
Conduct field inspections during construction to verify structural integrity and address any issues.
- Documentation:
Prepare detailed technical drawings, specifications, and reports outlining design calculations, material selections, and construction procedures.
- Technical Expertise:
Stay updated on new engineering technologies, materials, and construction methods.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management
Work Days
Normal work schedule is Monday - Friday
Qualifications/ Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Proficiency in structural analysis software (e.g., STAAD, SAP, RISA)
- Strong understanding of mechanics, physics, and mathematics
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction documents
- Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with diverse stakeholders
- Knowledge of local building codes and regulations
- Five years of relevant experience preferred.
- Active PE Licensure
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
Additional Requirements:
