Position Summary:
This position is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the field of Structural Engineering. The position requires application of sound engineering principles and practices to components and assemblies that require structural analysis and design. Under minimal supervision, this position performs a variety of structural reviews and analysis related to primarily carbon and stainless steel components and assemblies for non-building and industrial structures, examples: large exhaust steel stacks and related structural support steel platforms for gas turbine and large stationary engine applications.
This person is primarily responsible for developing and maintaining the product line technical design and analysis tools and key technology supply partners. The role is also responsible for keeping the company abreast of regulations and technology advancements. In addition, the SME assists with customer proposals, field testing, field failures and customer site visits as required.
Essential Functions:
- Develop and maintain tools for structural design, analysis and testing of systems and train Product and Customer engineers on the use of the tools as required.
- Assist Customer and Product Engineering teams with customer proposals, especially for non-routine applications.
- Define technical architecture of products and their integration with other Durr Universal systems.
- Provide technical input in developing new products and business relationships.
- Develop and maintain technology supply partners.
- Research, track and report on global regulations and technologies affecting Durr Universal business.
- Perform field measurements, investigations and inspections as needed.
- Support Sales on customer and site visits as needed.
Education/Experience:
- B.S. in Civil / Structural Engineering from an accredited engineering school (ABET), preferably possess or are currently working towards - a P.E. license in any US State.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in the application, function, design, and testing in areas of expertise civil/structural/mechanical, and or engineering mechanics with previous experience in structural static, and dynamic analysis.
- Must have completed the following or equivalent courses from an accredited engineering school, including but not limited to: structural analysis, steel structures, structural dynamics and/or earthquake engineering, and practicum in finite element analysis (FEA). Coursework in life cycle and fatigue analysis is beneficial.
- Ability to independently perform hand calculations, use computerized tools such as Excel and MathCAD, and/or similar tools as required to complete structural engineering tasks.
- Working knowledge of general structural analysis programs including RISA 3D FEA and RISA Connection. Knowledge of other general structural analysis programs including STAAD and RAM Connection, SAP 2000, Abaqus (Simulia), Visual Analysis, and other similar FEA programs will be considered as well.
- Must have knowledge of the application of finite element analysis within static and dynamic analysis, including understanding modal analysis to analyze product and system performance.
- Must have basic knowledge of experimental design for the test and evaluation of complex non-building and industrial complex systems as required.
- Candidate must be familiar with current US building codes and steel design standards, including but not limited to IBC 2012 or later, ASCE 7-10 or later, AISC steel construction manual, and AISC 360-10 seismic design guide. Other standards including ASME PVP design codes, API, and /or other codes pertaining to industrial and non-building structures and or systems are beneficial.
- Must have basic knowledge of measurement and instrumentation used for test and evaluation of products installed in the field.
