OVERVIEW: The Structural Engineer provides expertise and support in a variety of areas including:
- Being a knowledgeable Structural Engineer, adhering to company, department, and client standards and procedures, and having an in-depth understanding of structural design and deliverables development.
- Following procedures and collaborating to prepare design deliverables that meet project requirements under general supervision of the Chief Structural Engineer.
- Remaining continually vigilant in finding opportunities to improve quality and efficiency.
- Using data from mechanical and electrical disciplines, as well as client and vendor information sources to prepare structural design.
- Performing structural steel framing design, foundation design, concrete framing design, civil sitework design.
- Working with designers and junior engineers toward completion of construction documents and having a working knowledge of Revit and applicable structural design software.
- Having extensive knowledge of applicable building codes.
REPORTS TO: Chief Structural Engineer
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Proactively communicate and coordinate design work within the department, with other disciplines, and with external stakeholders such as clients and vendors.
- Act as Lead Structural on multi-discipline projects.
- Assist project manager on major projects.
- Independently manage projects with majority structural scope.
- Work with project execution team of junior engineers and designers.
- Train and help develop the skills of our junior engineers
- Multi-task on several projects and adapt to changing scope and deadlines.
- Run project meetings and discussions; prepare associated notes and minutes.
- Review and discuss project concepts with owner.
- Prepare efficient and organized email communications both internal and with clients.
- Interact confidently with clients and maintain client satisfaction with our project execution and deliverables.
- Develop strong relationships with clients.
- Actively participate and contribute to project and interdepartmental meetings to facilitate successful completion of projects and to meet customer expectations and needs.
- Have awareness and track assigned project budgets, schedules, and scopes.
- Organize and direct project SMACCTM reviews for structural only projects.
- Participate in SMACCTM reviews for all projects to which assigned.
- Understand and consistently apply or voice concerns of safety, maintenance, accessibility, constructability, and coordination.
- Learn and evaluate new design software as well as develop company use of current design software.
- Conduct terrestrial laser scanning site visits and register point clouds.
- Direct preparation of construction documents.
- Detail structural framing systems for both new and modified structures.
- Coordinate work with other disciplines.
- Develop design criteria for structural work.
- Assist with concept development of structural systems.
- Issue and record drawing submittals and revisions.
- Respond to Requests for Information and field questions.
- Participate and present at monthly Autodesk User Group meetings.
- Check structural calculations and construction documents prepared by yourself or others for errors, omissions, and adherence to company standards for quality.
- Assist in the development of structural drafting and design standards and new production methods to improve the company’s best practices, efficiency, and consistency.
- Identify, communicate, and explore solutions to conflicts and clashes.
- Manage and track assigned project budgets and schedules.
- Recognize and assist in change order requests.
- Participate in project lessons learned meetings.
- Perform loading analysis and determination for all type of structures.
- Develop complex structural analysis models using STAAD, RISA, or other analysis program.
- Perform finite elements analysis including development of FE models.
- Understand and utilize knowledge of structural codes including the IBC, ASCE, AISC, ACI, and AWS.
- Analyze and design structural systems with broad range of proficiency in various materials:
- Structural Steel
- Concrete
- Masonry
- Perform complex structural designs including:
- Foundations of vibrating equipment
- Vibrating equipment support structures
- Large retaining walls at dump hoppers
- Steel hoppers, bins, and silos
- Modifications to concrete silos
- Large process ductwork
- Develop site civil designs including paving, grading, drainage.
- Make structural site visits and prepare reports as required for:
- Structural condition assessments
- Structural reliability programs
- Project data gathering
- Terrestrial laser scanning
- Prepare reports on findings and recommendations for analysis studies.
- Develop calculation templates for use by other engineers.
- Have strong proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD and ability to develop drawings.
- Possess working knowledge of basic equipment practices.
- Continuously update and expand personal knowledge of the structural field as well as knowledge of client processes and facilities.
- Assist with preliminary designs and construction quantity estimates.
- Perform shop drawing reviews.
- Evaluate contractor proposals for alignment with project Request for Proposal.
- Evaluate contractor submittals for compliance with project specifications and drawings.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Structural or other discipline such as Civil).
- 3-5 years’ experience in structural engineering (heavy industrial experience preferred.)
- EIT strongly preferred.
- Strong structural engineering experience with a broad range of industrial project types.
- Excellent communication skills with an understanding of teamwork and the requisite ability to coordinate work with internal and external project stakeholders.
- Strong organization skills to effectively manage time and resources in the most efficient manner. The ability to multi-task on several projects and adapt to changing scope and deadlines. Diligent taking of notes during project discussions. Efficient and organized email communications.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Generally, the position requires proficient computer skills with extended periods of six to eight hours sitting and entering data into a computer with intense attention to detail.
Some travel may be required. Site conditions will vary, but can be in facilities with high heat, excessive noise, and accumulated dirt and dust. Site visits can also include walking over uneven surfaces, climbing stairs or ladders, and bending and stooping to examine progress or status of work, or to adjust settings to field devices or equipment.
Occasional lifting on the job is generally limited to moving computers, scanners, hand tools, meters, and manuals or files whose length and size cause them to be clumsy to move around, and whose weight is usually under 50 lb.
