About the Job
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Civil and Structural Engineer will design and develop steel and concrete components and structures, specifications, breakouts, bills of materials, scopes of work, means and methods, and drawings for all aspects of the project. The Civil and Structural Engineer will develop and integrate design processes and best practices and be accountable for achieving cost, schedule and productivity metrics of work assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Perform Civil and Structural Engineering Tasks: including design of steel and concrete structures to support glass batching, melting, forming, annealing, and handling processes.
Engineering and Installation Cost Estimates: Develop cost estimates; solicit and review civil and structural bids from vendors and verify compliance to specifications and bills of material prior to final order placement.
Construction Feasibility: Assess design plans for constructability, identifying potential challenges and proposing solutions to improve the construction process.
Material & Equipment Planning: Analyze and select appropriate materials, components, equipment, and techniques for executing structural work, with consideration of project constraints, timelines, and safety requirements.
Means & Methods Development: Create detailed plans for the means and methods of construction, outlining safe and efficient procedures for structural work such as erecting, reinforcing, and assembling steel, concrete, timber, and other structural materials.
Safety & Code Compliance: Ensure all proposed means and methods adhere to relevant safety regulations, building codes, and industry standards. Conduct risk assessments and propose mitigation strategies for high-risk structural activities.
Collaborative Work: Work cross-functionally with construction managers, contractors, and engineers to ensure alignment between structural design and field execution.
Provide technical guidance to ensure that construction follows the developed means and methods.
Site Support: Visit construction sites as needed to evaluate conditions, provide construction support on the execution of structural work, and troubleshoot any issues that arise during the implementation of the means and methods.
Documentation: Prepare studies, reports, designs, specifications, bills of material, vendor manuals sketches, diagrams, schematic drawings, final working/construction drawings and as-built drawings. Maintain civil and structural component specifications and drawing standards.
Quality Assurance: Oversee the quality control of structural work, ensuring that it meets the required specifications, tolerances, and safety standards throughout the construction process. Plan and coordinate equipment inspections and factory acceptance tests prior to shipment to project site
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering or a related field.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in structural engineering with a focus on developing means and methods for structural projects. Experience with an industrial focus or glass manufacturing design and application is a plus.
Skills:
- Working knowledge of MathCAD, AutoCAD, STAAD, and COMPRESS is preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of strength of materials, stress analysis, and structural engineering.
- Solid interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts and construction methods to non-technical team members.
- Strong project management skills and the ability to balance multiple projects and deadlines.
- Familiarity with OSHA standards, building codes (e.g., ASCE, IBC), and other safety regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to obtain licensure within a short time frame is a plus.
- Previous experience writing and implementing means and methods for large- scale structural projects for industrial facilities.
- Familiarity with temporary works design (e.g., formwork, shoring, scaffolding).
- Experience working closely with contractors on site-specific challenges and innovative construction techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to take a project from concept to implementation.
- Willingness to travel to projects. Typical travel periods will be up to 2 weeks with an annual travel estimate of 20%.
