Work Location: Birmingham, Alabama (must live within 1 hour of The Energy Center: 3535 Colonnade Parkway, Birmingham, AL 35243)
Work Schedule: Remote – this individual will be expected to work in the office at The Energy Center while onboarding and getting familiar with company processes and procedures. After that time, this individual can work remotely/work from home. Candidate must reside within approximately 1 hour of The Energy Center.
Expected Duration of Assignment: 3 years
Job Summary:
- This is a long-term contract opportunity to join Southern Company’s Design Civil Transmission division based at The Energy Center and contribute to impactful, meaningful projects for Alabama Power Company (APC) and Mississippi Power Company (MPC).
- The Structural Engineer in the Transmission Civil Design organization will be responsible for designing and analyzing new or existing substation structures and foundations. The Structural Engineer will also design transmission line foundations and provide design assistance to transmission line structures.
- Provide quality designs for Transmission Substation and Line projects, including substation structures, substation, and transmission line foundations to meet schedule and budget requirements.
- Provide work direction and oversight for designers and drafters.
- Serve as the civil structural representative on solution teams and prepare preliminary designs as required to support the process.
- Support Generations effort on specialized structural projects.
- May serve as a company representative on industry committees.
- Manage and work with structural designers and detailers to provide fabrication quality steel and concrete drawings.
- Minimum 5 years of design experience of industrial engineering and/or commercial structural engineering.
- Experience analyzing steel connections.
- Professional Engineering (PE) registration is a plus, but not required.
- Proficient with MathCAD and STAAD Pro.
- Working knowledge with ANSYS.
- Working knowledge of AISC, ASCE, ACI codes.
- Design experience in transmission structures is a plus, but not required.
- Computer skills to be proficient with standard office software applications.
- Interpersonal skills sufficient to build working relationships with peers, internal customers and the general public.
- Time management skills sufficient to manage multiple projects with various priorities and competing deadlines.
- Written and verbal communication skills sufficient to satisfactorily complete project documentation and to function effectively in a team environment.
- This individual will be expected to work in-office at The Energy Center while onboarding and becoming familiar with our processes and procedures. After that time, this individual can work remotely.
- Candidate must reside approximately 1 hour from The Energy Center.
- This position may require field visits and/or involve occasional overnight travel.
- PPE Requirement: Hardhat, safety glasses and possibly steel toe shoes.
